An excellent idea. Not hard to get some cars together for that sort of thing either. When EVO did these £XXk Heroes features I always found them entertaining and more to the point the results were attainable by the average member.

Would LOVE to see the exclusions on that warranty......I would bet a significant sum that engine destruction wont be covered.

Catastrophic failure therefore being potentially financially ruinous which weighed against a new fully warranted BMW makes this a daft comparison.

The 911 certainly appeals more but Joe Public cant realistically use just either of those cars to answer the same question cant he/she?

Any new vs. old comparisons should include predicted running costs over the average time someone might keep the car too, say three years.

That's not to say this would favour new or old, as I imagine the BMW would shed as much value as the Porsche would cost to run.

I agree that the 1 series vs the world is getting a bit boring now. I actually think comparisons like this between new and used are much more interesting. people are often too blinkered to look at the more unusual alternatives and then too scared by the thought of running costs, when often in reality they aren't as bad as they think. There are plenty of options out there for 25k with pretty useless rear seats and a 5 seconds 0-60 time.

I brought this up in one of the other threads.

£35k give or take, daily driver/commuter, needs occasional back seats, age unimportant though reliability is. Real world choice.

Agreed, with all the threads on here lately regarding bland cars, etc PH could do a bit more to promote affordable/fun motoring in all shapes and sizes.

Include general running costs i.e. servicing, tax, consumables too and hopefully a few more people will opt for PH cars rather than a A2/3/4/5/6/7 or 1/3/4/5/6/7 Series diesel in white with 19" wheels

I should probably ignore this comment as it looks like you are just trolling, but why would you assume this? How would you know the driver hadn't bought it brand new for example?

As an aside, I don't know how it would be possible to keep a 911 in good condition for sub £1k per annum - I've spend more than that on average over the past 2.5 years on a 2003 Focus RS.

I'm sure sub £1k per annum is possible but surely the condition will just deteriorate if you are skimping on the maintenance, in which case the car won't be as fun to drive as it could be, which would sort of defeat the point of having it in the first place...

I'd be all over the 911 myself, but the above quote surprised me. I thought the 1-series boot/back seat was very spacious. Plenty of room for 2 adults on a long journey and the boot can swallow as much kit as you'd expect a hatchback to take.

Some of the comments on here are just plain rude; is this Pistonheads or The Sun? Get over it, if you don't like the comparisons, don't read them (but I bet you did!). Are you paying to receive these articles? No! Does it take time to produce these reviews, it sure does so have some respect for the editors. There is a good mix of articles on here to cover most petrol heads; just because you don't like this series, no point wining on about it!

Still thinking about the best all round car for my purposes!

I honestly don't get it and 30k+ is affordable performance now, is it? Not to the average man on the street it isn't. And it looks pig ugly.

Usually by people who seemingly have never driven one.

Apart from brakes and clutch which are clearly wear-and-tear items, there's not much the Porsche warranty won't pay out for. Should someone be unfortunate enough to suffer a dead engine, Porsche will install a completely new unit, ancilliaries and all. The only assumption is that the car is serviced at a respectable dealer, using genuine parts
