the tartan is the reason we won't buy one to replace our Mk5 (without adding another 1500 quid for leather)...hideous, but then again less hideous than looking at a one series each time you walk up to drive it

I'm not a massive fan of VW's, but for me the tartan is one of the few things that would make me want to own one of these. I love the tartan, personally. And the Golf ball gearknob.

Takes all sorts. smile

I did get the M135i instead of the golf as the golf is just too expensive with limited negotiation on price. I got £5800 off a huge spec M135i making it a similar price to an average spec GTI.

I am a big Golf GTI fan and have had x2 brand new ones over the years but the M135i is in a different league, although its not the best looking of cars!

Great cars but getting too expensive by the time you add the necessary options. Interestingly, even the VW sales person secretly agreed...
Best bargain of the day against the M135i is an Edition 30 GTI manual DSG. This is a real wolf in sheeps clothing and they all run 300+ with a simple stage 1 APR or Revo software. They have a great spec and can easily tuned to 360-370Bhp without the turbo being changed....serious wallop for your money.

Good low mileage examples to be had at under 10k....a real bargain for those in the know and much nicer than a Megane and when fitted with a diff as quick on the twisties and even quicker in a straight line (if needs be)!!

Definitely not boring. Just remember that not so long ago you'd need to pay as much as the average house for something that went as quick as today's bog standard Golf GTI. And remember that such cars would be strictly 2 seats with hardly any luggage space, would be outrageously expensive to insure and maintain, and also rust like there was no tomorrow.

Thanks VW for raising the bar. Like many others I appreciate the Golf GTI for what it is: affordable, practical fun that's stood the test of time. Only the Focus ST has similar credibility.

Just back from 2k miles on the continent in my 3-door Mk5 - two of us, with two road bikes in the back plus assorted kit (and plenty of booze on the return leg...)

Car was absolutely superb - yes an ST or Megane would be quicker, but I doubt either would be as economical (32-34 actual mpg - 75/80 cruise) or practical. While they do come accross as a bit dull, I like that lack of "boy racer" image and the fact that it could be a basic Golf to the uninitiated.

And I bought it with my own cash, most of which I will get back when I sell it. Can't say that about an equivalent Megane. Just read the recent PH article on the subject....

CHF 1400 (yep, £1000 or thereabouts...) speeding fine in Bern didn't help trip costs though!

Need something bigger/even more practical but don't really want to get rid of it to be honest. Would consider a 4 door Mk 7 or Mk 6 Ed35 though.

Here's hoping for a sporty estate with this engine.

There's a distinct lack of fast estates at this size.

Octavia vRS (arguably bigger) and Focus ST are the only two that comes to mind.
New Leon Estate should do the job

Look into the ST you mentioned before. A lot bigger and more practical (esp in 5dr), the difference in size might surprise you!
Over 30mpg on a 80mph cruise as well.

I really liked the idea of buying one of these until I called the dealer for a PCP quote with minimum deposit over 4 years and I it was £430 per month!!!
