The carcass design & construction appears to be what transmits noise into the cabin.

Interestingly slick tyres or semi slicks are very noisy on the road in my experience.

Bloody nightmare. I've been looking for over a year now but still not made a choice.
Tread getting a bit low now?
Still got several mm left unfortunately, but on old P6000s that'll go in the bin as soon as I've made up my mind what to replace them with.

The cabin noise will be a combination of noise directly transmitted through the car and noise making its way via the air back into the cabin.

I'm guessing that most will be directly transmitted through the structure of the car.

However a drive by noise test should give a reasonable idea about how quiet or loud a tyre is. I would expect a low dB rated tyre from a drive-by test to be quieter inside the cabin.

(as I said about, I'm a former ear muff tester!)
This is spot on - if the majority of the road noise is coming in through your windows as a higher frequency "roar" that changes in pitch based on the surface then the lower dB rating on the tyre will make a big difference. However if it's being transmitted into the cabin as a low frequency rumble then it is down to the tread pattern and rubber compound of the tyre rather than the dB rating. Some cars are more sensitive to noise transmitted through the body shell than airborne noise.

Any progress here?

I also have P6000 all round, but the fronts need changing in a about 5000 miles or whatever.

Yup. Put a set of Vredestien Ultrac Centos on a couple of months ago. Overall not much quieter than the P6000s but noticeably better ride and feel.
