I disagree with the verdict on the VW as it really hasn't moved on performance wise in 8/9 years and I'm pretty sure the Megane 225, Focus ST mk2 and Astra VXR all available nearly 10 years ago would keep up with it (maybe even just edge it) in performance terms.

The BMW and Mercedes have moved things on both in performance terms (and price).

Pretty sure there's been some "evolution" as IIRC the MKV GTI was under 200bhp and around 7 secs to 60 (and the MK4 was slooow!)

And 40 odd MPG in the new one? Awesome! boxedin

Is the fuel consumption figure for the Golf correct?

Obviously these cars are not true competitors as they all available at different (discounted?) price points, and I doubt any one considering a Golf GTI would have the AMG Merc on the list.

All great cars though, and I don't subscribe to the Golf bashing that will no doubt arrive shortly. IMO it remains a classless, sensible, everyday performance hatch, just as it always has done. I would own one over any of the traditional hot hatch rivals.

If I was spending my own money today I would try and find the extra for the M135i. if I had to settle for the Golf it wouldn't be a disaster but wouldn't try and find more cash for the Merc unless finance/lease deals were favourable.

Having recently seen some Knob around the Belfast and North Down area flooring his Merc at every traffic light and driving around Tescos car park making loud ripping farting noises from the exhaust and then hurtling off into the sunset has made me realise i'm just jealous and want one.

Serious piece of kit. It really looked the part to.

BTW I wasn't shopping in Tescos.

Just shows you how overpriced a GT86 is.
I would probably take a Litchfield GT86/BRZ with supercharger and decent rubber (rather than the comedy eco-rubber OEM fitting) over all 3 of the above.

Ermm, I think you guys are now taking the piss. Besides the Golf GTI is out of its league, compared to the other two.
I guess you guys are having a slow news days or something.

Maybe it was down to the driver itself. Is your car modified or standard.

Agreed although the Mk V GTI was the slowest of the bunch back then... the article states "All three of these cars would embarrass supposedly hardcore performance cars of just a few years back".

The BMW and Merc would but im pretty sure my mk2 Focus ST would have at least kept up with the new GTI in standard form and would leave it for dead with the Mountune kit.

It would "embarrass it" in terms of MPG though laugh

Id suggest he wasnt as keen on speeding as you were.
+1

I would deffo fall into the category of not as keen on speeding as someone in a clio 200 found out and looked very proud of ones self going past a 250. S'all about the twisties, top speed on a busy motorway doesn't really do much for me personally...

No doubt on some part of the internet right now there is a "I spanked a 250" xD

edit. Just seen e-penis gif, love it

Surely an S3 Sportback with s-tronic (c£32k) would of been a far more relevant car than the Golf???

The Golf, as nice as it is, is not in the same league as the M135i or A45. The S3 on the otherhand is a direct rival in price and performance...

So how much are people really paying for the M135i?Saw one in black yesterday and the howl it made was quite splendid.

If we are talking 35k with options but actually paying 30k then my interest just went through the roof.

So much love for these cars, we've never had it so good with hot hatches! The Germans really know what they are doing. Can't wait until the Golf R lands driving

Think the Golf will start fully shining when VW make an R version.
