Automatic? Is it not meant to be a hot hatch?? I'm confused... Automatics are for old people and luxury saloons
Don't know which island you've been castaway on these past few years but this ZF isn't exactly an old 4-speed Merc slusher. Besides, it's not exactly uncommon for a modern fast car to offer only a two-pedal version. The A class looks like a Korean hatch - dreadful styling. Of-course it is all subjective, but I really like the 1 series - Since the Mk5, IMO I think the Golf has gone downhill exterior style wise, but the interior has improved!
Golf Gti is the only car I've ever had that EVERYONE liked - no one had a bad word to say about it - if you want to (try and) pull women get a Golf Gti.

CO2 not MPG
TX.
They're exactly the same thing, for a given fuel type. They don't even measure both on the test, IIRC - they measure one and then calculate the other from it. TX.

?????? so that's why MPG figures are so wide of the mark??
They're wide of the mark because the test isn't indicative of how the cars are used. The CO2 to MPG translation is very close to perfect - modern cars put out very little carbon monoxide or unburnt hydrocarbons and where else is the carbon from the petrol going to go?Nothing to add except for my continued hate for the 1 series hatch - some young (im 28, he was about 21) pleb in a 116 clocked me coming into a roundabout 2 days ago and went from the left to the right lane just to tailgate me as close as possible. I wanted to pull into the left hand lane to get out of his way (dual carriageway) but he had decided he would swerve into it in an effort to undertake me, que 10 second mash on loud pedal and young plebs girlfriend pissing herself at his fail 1/4 mile later when he screamed past...
I know a lot of you guys are not from this area (your all southerners yes? ;-) ) where you don't seem to have these kind of turds but in the midlands 1 series hatch = young bloke who thinks he is 'it' car.
For me, Mercedes or Golf... always had a soft spot for the GTI and since the MK5 it seems to have delivered.

I recon there is another side to that story. Its a shame we will never get to hear it Prawnboy said:
the only way you could have made the comparison any duller was to have no verdict at all.....
......oh you did.
if 40K is the benchmark, i'll take the GTI and then spend the rest on a weekend car.
Agreed, I'll take the GTI and cop for a Westfield or similar, that's a cracking idea.......oh you did.

If it was me and if I had 38-40k to blow and wasn't worried about the outlay I'd probably take the Merc.
I've been a great believer in mechanical diffs as I've run many Quaiffes in FWD car's so experiencing the Golf at full chat mid bend with this new electronic diff will be interesting comparison to what I have known and experienced in the past. It is the one thing I'd retro fit to the M135.
As for Haldex 4WD I'm not convinced especially for track use where I'd be heading as in my experince even with a Haldex controller they are not ideal for track. I've experienced that horrible shuffling of power many times on track....after all it's not a pure 4WD experience.
From a value of money perspective if it was my money I'd choose the Golf and put an APR or Revo software to boost the power....I'm sure 300bhp will be achievable aka older Edition 30 /8P S3 / Golf R. It may not have the outright grunt of the A45 and a mapped M135 but even so with a 27k outlay and £500 remap it would be even more entertaining than stock but with a potential massive saving.

Get them whilst they're available for peanuts ( though a hopped up shopping car for £30 to £40k isn't really peanuts). The German economy is picking up and production will be switching back to the motherland. The German's have been dumping metal on the UK for a few years as our car market has been pretty good and it's been keeping their factories buzzing along. IMO, anyone who spends £40k on a hatchback needs their heads testing. The Golf is a decent looking car, but a bit boring, the other two are plain awful to look at. Time will be the test for these cars when the maintenance costs start biting the used car enthusiasts. They won't be so popular then.
