Peugeot 106 GTi - daily driver?
Discussion
I can only echo previous comments. I bought my 106 in 2008 at 94k miles, now up to 187k (one of the highest mileage out there i bet!) and used for 80 miles of commuting every day. The car combined with b-roads makes the long commute much more interesting. I have driven it to Luxembourg once, not to uncomfortable as the driver, think my passengers were fed up by the time we got there though.
Parts are cheap and its easy to work on making it affordable to run, I average 40mpg.
In the time I have owned it I have rebuilt the rear beam (preventative whilst fitting Bilstein dampers), fitted many front ball joints and suspension bushes, anti roll bar drop links and one set of engine mounts. The clutch was changed about 5k miles ago. People complain about drive shafts but I have only ever had to replace one. Gearboxes also but mine is original at 187k.
I cannot see me selling mine and will probably run it until dies now.

Gah I'm too excited now, I may have to get an early Xmas present to myself... Regarding wheels, exhaust and shocks I'm aiming for as standard as humanly possible, if not a set of 205 GTI alloys would be prime.
I know a vts and a 106 gti are the same cars, but the 106 interior is a million times nicer (to me) than the inside of a saxo

Whatever I can be bothered saving really. In an ideal world, it'd be £1500 as a sort of limit, but if something pristine comes up for say £2000 I can obviously stretch out an extra chunk. Likewise if something comes up for £1000 I've got some money to fix issues
What about an ST170 or clio 172? I'd be trying both of them if I wanted a hot hatch for 2K. Skyedriver said:
Have been wondering about oe of these instead of the ol' mini for the under 1400 class in Hillclimbing.
Is it worth getting a base 1100 engined one and replacing the running gear or just get the proper model I wonder. And would I ever sell the 71 mini?
The lower spec ones have very poor suspension, usually 3-bolt wheels/hubs as well, which you've have to tear out for competition. Is it worth getting a base 1100 engined one and replacing the running gear or just get the proper model I wonder. And would I ever sell the 71 mini?
With a few parts you can build a sub-1400cc engine quite easily, although depending how much power you want it can be a pretty pricey thing to do.

Tried insurance on a Clio initially and it was so ludicrously high I didn't even bother looking any further :') seems to be VW's and pugs that are cheaper for my to insure and not a whole lot moretomcrowther said:

Have you sat in both? The VTS is a much nicer place to be. I've owned 2 VTS' and a 106 GTi, so my opinion should count for something! I know a vts and a 106 gti are the same cars, but the 106 interior is a million times nicer (to me) than the inside of a saxo
Be rude not to consider the Saxo though - especially if the price difference is still as substantial as it was.
OMP wheel optional I miss that car. It stayed fairly local after I sold it, the guy got in touch with me offering me it for £1500 a few months ago.
Bearing in mind that I originally bought the car for £900 2 years previously, I declined

I'd LOVE a 306 GTi, however it's not viable with insurance costs and what not
I'll be looking out for a basically unmolested one hopefully with low-ish (sub 90k) miles and as I still live at home I can afford to save up a decent stash for a quality example.
Regarding mileage - my mate just bought this for under a grand.I'll be looking out for a basically unmolested one hopefully with low-ish (sub 90k) miles and as I still live at home I can afford to save up a decent stash for a quality example.

I think it has around 130k, you really wouldn't know... buy on condition - not mileage.
Very similar. He's gained a yellow gearstick from somewhere though
The general consensus does seen to be buy off condition with these and disregard the miles.

Thanks for all the help anyway guys, not a bad start to what will probably be many hours at work on the PH forums... I'll post up whatever I buy in the end, possibly a picture of my current car when I get my camera back
Loving the 106 praise on here, I used mine as a daily for 2 years, the only downsides I can think of is no AC in summer, and the wear rate of parts is high. If your commute includes b roads you will simply love driving this car. A true wolf in sheep's clothing and the best handling car I've driven.
FYI, the example I looked at was priced at £2200. It was an utter nail and needed everything replacing. If not a full restoration. None of this was evident looking at the online photos. So you may well have to look at lots to find anything decent. In the end I sold my Audi S3 so had to fill the gap quickly. I pulled the trigger on a mint full main dealer history T190 celica. That also has great handling plus second cam poke. Clearly a bit more space if you need it. That does not stop me from thinking a mint Rallye or Gti Pug is a good idea at some point. Dreaming of throttle bodies making 170bhp in a rallye...
