If you switch the cabin alarm sensor off by pressing the small button on the fob just after the large one (signalled back by a beep from the car) it will last quite a lot longer.
I did not know that.

Interesting. My S2 didn't have one when mine went, and the car was only three years old when I got it with no indication of a replacement so I'd be surprised if it wasn't on its original alternator.
I had my S1 7 years and I was lucky enough to never have an alternator issue.

I did put my Elise battery on a trickle charger when not is use for any length of time.

Yep, the sensor bombards the cabin with infra red or whatever, waiting to notice if something breaks the signal to trigger the alarm (as you will probably have noted on reaching in to grab something when the hood is off!) If you press the small button once after pressing the big button and then reach in, nothing should happen, but similarly the drain on the battery is that much less.

50-60k miles in my S1, on a car that's done twice that, and still on the original alternator.

Only bloody thing that is original!!

There is a lot of talk about the quality of the article. Pretty sad that people are getting slated for expressing an opinion on the quality of writing of this article. The standard is not great on PH, lets be honest so hows this for a solution:

Should there be a rating for how well the article was written as well as how much you like the car? Might be a good way of giving feedback and keeping the topic about the car?

S2 owners just need to unplug the curling tongs and switch off the hair dryer to slow down flattening of the battery.

Nice to see Stef getting a mention, he's looked after all my Elises over the last 5 years or so and really does go beyond what you would expect as a cusomer, top fella.
Even did a 130 mile round trip once to fix my knackered throttle position sensor on my old S1.

Makes good tea too smile

This is on the Cobra 6442 only mind. From the service manual:

"Intrusion Sensing
A hyperfrequency radar detector, mounted at the rear of the centre tunnel, is able to detect substantial
movement within the cockpit and trigger the alarm in the event of unauthorised intrusion. The range and
sensitivity of the intrusion sensor may be adjusted if necessary - see page 6.
If an animal is to be left in the vehicle when the alarm is armed, it is necessary temporarily to switch off
the intrusion sensing by the following procedure:
Arm the system in the usual way by pressing once the large button on the transmitter.
Within 40 seconds, press once the smaller button on the transmitter. This action will be acknowledged by
a single buzz of the buzzer.
Note:
  1. Intrusion sensing will automatically be reinstated the next time the alarm is armed.
  2. Do not inhibit operation of the radar detector by placing bags or large objects against the sensor."
