It is not a proper "Audi Quattro" system since it has a transverse engine.

With that mentality in a few years time we'll have this:

Looks ridiculous and where will it all stop? Bring back the days of one, possibly two purposeful but meaty exhaust tubes (and room for a proper spare tyre without the boot floor space being taken up with an extra 'bling bling' exhaust). Simply but effective.
Gulzar, your S3 is ready

What I don't get is the fact 'small' saloons (relative to the range before someone points out it's bigger than a 90s 7 series or something) don't sell. How many Jettas or Focus saloons do you see relative to their hatchback counterparts? Hell, I'm into my German cars and I didn't even know Audi made an A3 saloon! Yet Audi has decided to invest in building an S3 version, seems odd.

I really like the idea of it though and it's handsome too, but I forsee some pretty big discounts on these.
They've invested in building these, not really for the UK or even European markets. China and the US are hatchback-phobic. No doubt that's where the bulk of sales will be.

This is a very interesting segment now... this and the CLA 45 AMG def making it interesting, both hitting 60 in frankly stupidly quick times and delivering rather good MPG - whats not to like in convincing the wife another car is a good idea (will play the 4wd and its great in the snow card!)

I wanted the AMG, but this represents a £7k saving - on a PCP, this is going to be amazing.

Think ill see about a test drive as merc cant get me a CLA drive til jan!
Went out in the CLA at the PH SS at Merc world. Was very impressed with how quick it was even with 4 people.

He said its the most powerful factory 2.0ltr to date. Think its 350bhp so 50 more over the S3

The E46 M3 had a quad exhaust and nobody complained (346bhp).
Also, the current TT-S has 272bhp 4cyl and has the same quad setup.

Maybe the No.Exhaust Tail Pipes is directly proportional to the 0-60? :-)

I may need to consider trading the S4 for one of these. I miss my old 8P quite a bit. The S4 is roomier but no where near as chuckable, and it's almost too wide for the city and landstrassen here. Decisions, decisions...

Looks quite understated to me, in fact quite 'stealth' given the impressive performance. Don't see how the pipes are atttracting so much criticism really. With options it'll be very pricey, but in 2 or 3 years will be a performance bargain I expect.

I've noticed a few road tests now mentioning the compliant ride in the latest A3, which is generally the opposite of what you would expect, are VAG finally listening to all the complaints about ride quality over the years?

Don't be silly. Audi use Quattro to describe their all-wheel-drive systems, regardless of implementation. So it is a Quattro.

Not a quattro (small q) though.

They already have - it's a called a 5-door S3 hatch! I really don't see the point of this. It's the result of blokes with beards, tight trousers, and pullovers having a design meeting and saying "Why don't we create another niche? How faaabulous!" If I wanted an A3 with a proper boot I'd buy an A4. The customers in the Far East like their saloons big with plenty of rear legroom. It's a case of the Emperor's New Clothes. Just because it's an Audi with four wheel drive doesn't make it any good.

I think an owner of a FQ400 might have a word to say about that? (or a FQ360 for that matter)

I agree on the exhaust pipes. I remember when an M5 had 2 discrete pipes off on the one side. Now all performance variants need 4 pipes, or one f*** off one in the middle because it's The Law. Have a look at rally cars, that shows you what you actually *need*.
Exactly - less show, more go! Even the legendary Group B SWB quattro's of rallying's glory days had one large exhaust, and they would p**s rings around this S3 in any situation. Formula 1's new 2014 regulations mandate the use of a single tailpipe which must be angled upwards to prevent the exhaust flow being used for aerodynamic effect, so can't understand a puny 300bhp S3 needing 4 exhaust outlets unless is purely to please the crass and clueless 'look at me' brigade.
