Just been told the abs ring has cracked on my clio campus, he said i could buy a abs ring off ebay but theres a potential the driveshaft could be corroded and theres a risk it wont fit, so hees suggesting i get the driveshaft replaced with it.

What do you guys think??

Complete drive shaft won't be dear on a Clio - May as well if you can afford to as you 'll be getting a fresh cv joint as a bonus

140 it is all in, is it risky trying just the ring?

If you get the driveshaft cleaned up then there's no more risk of it failing again than a new one. The only hassling is fitting it (heating the ring and cooling the shaft so it can be slipped over).

A new shaft is a straight swap for a fitter looking for less work to do. Weigh up the cost against the labour for fitting the ring.

I had a similar problem with a jag X-Type. Rear driveshafts would swell due to corrosion and crack the ABS ring. Later model replacement shafts came enamel coated to prevent it happening again.

The reluctor rings cost £2 on ebay, but I assume you're not trying to fit them yourself - so it's probably an hours labour (+£2) of risk. Up to you in that case...

If it's longer than an hour, then just get the whole shaft done as it will be approaching £140 anyway

A new driveshaft is around £60, so that must mean he is charging £80 for labour.

It is 99% the same job changing a driveshaft and changing an ABS ring on a clio so the labour cost would be the same, £83 all in for the ABS ring.

Did you get a quote for changing the ring only?

It`s the corrosion that causes the ring to snap,it builds up underneath and just stretches the already weakened(its self by corrosion)ring to snapping point.
The problem is that, depending on the level of corrosion, after cleaning off the crud and rust back to good metal the rings mating surface on the CV joint casing could be left too small to hold it securely.

I never understood why these teeth were not cast into the cup originally,or even incorporate a flange in the casting and then cut the teeth after, its hardly rocket science.

Ive done a few of these normally snap/abs light comes on just after replacing a set of discs the ring over times become weaker with rust and with the shock of a hammer to remove the discs then it splits the ring.

Its a really easy job to do remove bolt ball joint from hub undo the hub nut pull the driveshaft out of the hub. Watch the old ring fall off if not a gentle tap clean up end of c.v joint and tap the new ring back on no need for heating up of these. In a garage with ramp and proper tools max of 30-40 mins to do ive done one in 20 mins before but everything was nice and free so made the job easier.

Agree on the above it's a stupid design much like a lot of French cars.

A bit off topic I know, but I really wish people would look into what this actually entails/means before using it as judgement on a garage. You might be surprised.

This the good garage scheme is a scheme sent up by forte lubricants whos solve purpose is to sell there stock. To sign up to the scheme you need to buy there engine flushes and fuel treatments along with service sheets etc etc. I work in a garage as a member of the good garage scheme and it's a massive rip of but we have a good rep in our area so we don't get much customers through the scheme more word and mouth over 10+ years.

I have replaced many abs rings on the Clios over the years, and as yet haven't had any issues.

Why change a perfectly serviceable CV joint ? Very easy job , 30 mins max. Parts can be sourced from most motor factors for approx. £7 ( preferable to eBay unknown quality items )

edit ...Don't forget to count the number of segments on the ring before ordering wink
