I keep forgetting that this is PistonHeads, a website about cars and speed, and not Mumsnet when I read some of the drivel on here.

You'll find that the 'speed matters' tagline was abandoned some time ago, because it's about as socially acceptable these days as forcing yourself on your Secretary at the Christmas party.

However, if you'd like to join us from the 1960's, or whenever it was that people last took any serious interest in the Land Speed Record, I'm sure we'd be happy to have you. smile

No, but when people aim insults at me, I'm quite happy to aim them back.

Part of me hopes it is not over and somebody is going to buy the car and assists in the fire sale and carry on with the project.

But, another part of me fears that what I wondered back in 1997 is correct, now the sound barrier has gone, the LSR might be finished because of the sheer amount of work required to make a car go any faster.

I love Thrust SSC, and part of me would be quite happy with her to sit as the queen forever, but another part of me thinks the concept of nobody going for what is possibly the most basic human desire of a record, who is the fastest of all, is a a big loss.

Everything has to be instant now. No one is interested in 10 year’s time.

I think part of the issue is also rivalry.

SSC was driven onward because of Breedlove and SoA. Richard knew to take him seriously. That is not the case now, this seemed a worthless chase really. Car never looked right to me, and was beset with issues with the rocket propulsion system.

The only car I know of now is Rosco's new Aussie Invader thing, but he has a record of hype and no real results, although no-one can doubt the mans bravery!

the other thing I notice is that none of the press about this mentions Noble, is he ill, not involved anymore? Was the driving force originally behind the Bloodhound concept.

Anyone know what the electric powered car landspeed record is? I agree with above poster these jet engined days are behind us now.
341mph, at present
.
See now THATs achievable. I could probably knock something up in my shed that could take it biggrin
I'm already forming plans, in my head at the moment, to address that one, the wheel driven record is only 483mph from memory.....

Do you not have a good word to say about anybody?

I did have a collection of Mk1 Insights & I'm always on the lookout for another, now I drive EV's as my daily however.

It was about the challenge for me, not everybody wants a boring 9-5 job, I had one for a few years after I chose to leave Williams, F1 & a young family just don't work. Doing the 9-5 nearly killed me, yes it was easy money, but I was dying inside.

Thankfully in 2011 the phone rang & it was Bloodhound, saved me from a life of boredom at work.

That being the case, I can recommend starting your own business. smile

Personally, I never could stand the idea of working on just a single design project for years at a time (and hence took care to avoid it), but it must be triply soul-destroying when not only you don't get to see it though to the end, but the project ends up being a failure?

Working on failure(s) is all part of the UK's philosophy for industry and engineering. I've worked on countless engineer projects that came nowt.

I'd much rather work on one project seriously and give it my best shot and understand taht it it doesn't come off its not for the engineering, than manage a dozen with no understanding of how they work.

I like Mumsnet. It's all about misunderstandings about Center Parcs and anal sex nowadays.
Am I missing something out there !!!

I have to say that I'm actually pretty well disposed to anyone who owns a Mk.1 Insight - they're an interesting little car, and an order of magnitude more relevant than Bloodhound will ever be.

...as is anything to do with electric flight, the boundaries of which are far more important to push forward than chasing some spurious numerical target with a rocket on wheels.

I agree as well. I don’t see any slagging off being made and instead on balance someone like Equus (and Mave) have made huge contributions to the overall conversation, and I think it’s quite obvious he has distinct direct working knowledge of things related. I’ve followed it all and found loads of interesting information and much I wasn’t aware of in relation to the the LSR and work that’s got into it.

I know people like Insight have given lots of personal energy and effort into the Bloodhound project and like anything it must feel a touch raw when things don’t go as hoped. No one is targeting that. There’s very little criticism and slagging off of the “doers” - politely as it were - more challenge of what went on from the more mechanically minded over the design philosophy and reasonable questions about the viability of the overall project/money/marketing etc aspect of the effort.

It’s a bit ironic that there are some who go round feeling so offended by anything that implies criticism of the project are the first to shoot off with the caustic and personal comments and telling people that they are “objectionable” or “should take their PH card and leave” or “I thought this was PH where speed matters” or some such playground hissy bks. Some need to look at themselves and their own posting style a little bit. Calling out for mods on what’s one of the few interesting technical conversations on the forum. That’s a bit sad sack. rofl

I disagree. Frankly I have grown very tired of the rude posts and responses...equus's approach to Insight has been embarrassing and childish to say the least.....and when you get to the point of calling other forum members snowflakes and to strap on a set...(over rude comments he initiated)...I have had enough. Looks like the Mods had enough too......that post was removed.

Lets keep this civil, and keep ourselves on higher ground. Engineers and business men should act like they are just that. Otherwise, we will keep contacting the Moderators. Sorry to be sad sack.....but act like grown adults, and we wont have to go down that road.

I’m not sure why Pistonheads have chosen to delete my post but kept the one following which references it.
