RE: Mini Cooper S JCW: Spotted

This topic doesn't fill me with confidence, I got this 3 days ago....
I'm looking at minis myself at the minute as a possible next car. From mid 2011 I think it was the engines were changed from the N14 to the N18 and it is meant to fix a lot of the issues.N14, from limited research at the minute is known for high oil consumption, pistons that can turn oval, chain tensioner 'death rattle' and lots of carbon build up. From my reading the N18 shouldn't have these problems and I haven't found a thread talking about one engine coked up yet.
Some info here:
http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/cooper-s/14...
I had one and it was pretty good, never heard of the oil use issue although I did get the death rattle noise. Dealer wasn't interested, just said "oh, its something you read on the internet" and claimed they couldn't find anything wrong. Have they actually admitted it's a problem now or are they just maintaining it's a characteristic of the engine?

The 184 BHP change was mid 2010 iirc. Ours is a November 2010 with the later engine. I check the oil at least every couple of weeks, nothing used so far. /touch wood

My 2010 MCS has the N18 engine. Was the JCW updated later?
Looks like it, I'm still reading up myself so am no expert yet "Originally Posted by Twin sunroof View Post

That's for the jcw not the cooper S it was before this date."

Another R56 Cooper S JCW (after package with brakes and suspension) purchased it with 20,000 miles on the clock and had it just shy of two years so far - two coil packs failed, separately (£60 a pop), timing chain tensioner (£900), clutch went after i had it 10k miles and never had a clutch go before (£900). Yesterday afternoon it sounds like another coil pack has gone and the engine light is flashing again. It also goes through oil like its going out of fashion.
Great fun to drive but avoid like the fking plague.
In an update to my suspected third coil pack failure I get hit with this list of proposed repairs.. Great fun to drive but avoid like the fking plague.
I can get the tyres for £135 each, £584 to replace the wishbone ball joints when they cost £66 each is a joke but the £717 for the HP fuel pump when they replace it free of charge in America even after warranty is a kick in the teeth. They are at least asking BMW UK for a goodwill gesture on that.
So we shall see.

BMW have a nerve thinking its OK to charge over 700 notes for a fuel pump with known issues, when its covered in the states for 100k or 12 year's, its laughable, but then they seem to think its OK to do that with the cam chain tensioners too ....BMW classy brand of car, don't think so
I was in my local mini dealers yesterday booking the car in for a brake fluid change, and I overheard the service guy telling a customer he could probably get the work he was being quoted for cheaper ...no kidding Sherlock looking at the above posted quotation, rip off.
Edit to add
Thinking about it more haw cheesed me off enough to write to watchdog who have featured the N14 engine issues before I believe, probably do the grand sum of fk all but I've never felt strongly enough about anything before to do it, I suggest other mini owners who have experienced engine problems and BMW's refusal to acknowledge the inherent fault's and cover the repair costs do the same, hell even if you have been lucky so far I'd still suggest you do it, as you may well need help sooner rather than later.

It is and while I do enjoy driving the car when its working I simply cannot recommend purchasing one to anybody considering one built between 07-11 with BMW UK's current stance regarding the timing chain tensioner and HP fuel pump. BMW America has rectified these issues but considering they were probably all built here in the UK and the fact we are still left in the dark is shocking.
Bunch of shysters BMW UK.

The newer 184BHP engine came in mid 2010, hopefully this resolved the chain issue. Bunch of shysters BMW UK.
Time will tell.

Well BMW UK have apparently made a decision in less than 24hours to not help with any good will gesture or reduction with the £700 cost of replacing a faulty HP Fuel Pump which they themselves have had to redesign not once but twice to stop it from failing. fking s BMW.
Which dealer are you using?jogon said:
Stewarts Road BMW, London - main service centre for Park Lane BMW.
Surprised then, they're one of the better ones in the London/SE area, along with the Vines Group. It worth firing off an email to customer services, although they can take 48 hours to respond on there.
Not sure why some people are getting 100% goodwill though (albeit in 2012) http://www.mini2.com/forum/maintenance-mini-care/1...
