I find overtaking several cats at once (safely) incredibly satisfying and quite a buzz. Only issue I've had is when I overtook a lorry and he tried to close the gap making a safe overtake into a not so safe one.
At the lights later on he jumped out and raged. He then drove like a total psyco through a heavily built up area; not so clever is a clearly marked Staples lorry. I reported the goon.

There are still many areas where the driving is pretty good, the overtaking opportunities are OK, & you will very rarely see a speed camera, or a cop.

The trouble is they are mostly some distance from the places where you can earn a good income, unless you work in the mines.
Mmmm, yes I'm aware of that. Although Mrs Puff still manages to get a speeding ticket in the middle of nowhere. I just find Australian drivers so crap. I could even live with the crapness but it also seems to be passive aggressive crapness combined with some belief that they actually know how to drive properly.

Years ago (1995 to 1998) I used to do this commute:

http://goo.gl/maps/3XbPD

This was done in a None Turbo 1.4 AX deseasal with GT wheels (and a jack used to make space for them under the rear arches)

This under powered piece of st was much slower due to the upgrade from 145's to 185's, but cornering was improved (swings and roundabouts)

In 3 years, with sun, ice, rain, and snow, and mud, I became an expert in that road, taking every bend as fast as I could go, on the grounds that to apply the brakes would slow my journey

Friday afternoon's in the summer became interesting as I frequently attempted to overtake big powerful motorbikes between the Motorway and Settle. I had some favourite spots for overtaking and this was my favourite:

http://goo.gl/maps/1aDNX

I drove down there last year, and fk me I must be getting old. I'd never attempt now to overtake in an AX 1.4D anywhere on that road, and would need 300 BHP per ton before I would dare overtake on some of the straights I used to use.
The top bit of that road from Gisburn to the Yorkshire border has been reduced to a 50mph now, so there are more speed differentials between those who take notice and those who don't.

forgive my ignorance but aren't there like 5,000 gears in trucks, how can you accelerate past them quick enough? However if you are able to get past people then hats off to you sir! I would love to see how mental they go, if I was behind them after you'd completed the move they'd better not look behind because I would be pointing and laughing so hard
The other day on this very road I came round a bend heading towards Long Preston to meet a Scania animal feed HGV heading towards me overtaking a Land Rover Defender towing an animal trailer. I just eased off and let the guy through.

I had a Scania tractor unit towing an empty flatbed trailer follow me through an overtake on the A6 past a grey Toyota Auris doing less than 30mph in a 40mph limit towards Preston. They have more power and acceleration than you might expect when not heavily loaded. In some countries though there are specific restrictions on certain roads forbidding lorry drivers from overtaking when everyone else can.

Best buy Mrs Puff some glasses, she should be able to detect cops in the middle of nowhere.

Oz drivers do seem to be getting slower. I was recently on a classic car club run, south of Brisbane, on good country roads. A dozen cars were cruising about 75 to 100 meters apart for easy overtaking, at about 90 to 95 Km/H. I was tail end charley, so could see all this. I was amazed that in 45 kilometers, only 3 cars caught us. In the old days on such a road, everyone would be doing 110 or more, passing us, & disappearing ahead.

This one got flashed by me after I'd stopped from 60 (I'm stopped in the photo). I came over the brow of a hill to see the Transit overtaking a long line of cars. The wide angle of the dashcam lens makes him further away but it felt way too close and the driver apologised when he passed me.
Plenty of room.

I'd disagree if what was said is correct - What was stated was the picture was taken when stationary having braked from 60mph down to zero - at 60 mph it would be 88 feet traveled per second - I'd say that would put you in an impact situation

Not if they're 1/2 mile away in the shade under some trees. That was how I got done in NZ...and not another car anywhere to be seen!

Indeed. As I came over the brow of the hill I saw tranny man on my side and braked very heavily. He only has 'plenty of room' because I have done an emergency stop.

It was a vehicle mounted radar in a moving oncoming police car from a mile away. There's not much you can do about that except slow down whenever you see a white car in the distance. She did tear up the ticket and throw it out the window though!

Lucky you didn't have anything behind you. I've done a similar manoeuvre to avoid a head-on and was smacked by the. Ar behind. Obviously still their fault but it's less easy to anticipate an emergency stop from a generally clear road.

Heading up the A68 one time many years ago I found myself at the back of a military convoy. There were all sorts, Land Rovers, low-loaders with tanks on the back and someother stuff that I couldn't identify but they were green camo' with wheels/tracks on them...

Over the course of a number of miles I overtook them all, one by one...

...Just after I overtook the leading vehicle it indicated and pulled off into whatever depot' they were heading for.

I felt good that I'd overtaken them all but figured I'd wasted my time.

I hope that made her feel better. It wouldn't help most of us unfortunately.

I know it is unlikely we can develop invisible paint, but surely we can come up with a paint that scrambles radar reflections. Doing you from a mile away is cheating. Watching out for white cars won't help, more than half the police cars around here are anything but white.

My "Plenty of Room" was pure sarcasm, but can I add another bit of dry humour? The plenty of room that is found to avoid a head on is clearly the space you can use by heading into the ditch.

In all seriousness it's pretty good that death was avoided.

Now I've seen someone who did deserve flashing...

On a long straight this AM I caught up a Astra Estate (tailgate covered in random stickers, e.g. a Cornwall flag, if that give you the idea) just as it started to overtake a slow lorry.

I queued up behind the Astra, who made a real meal of getting past this lorry.

By this time a car had come into view in the other direction, but there was still plenty of room for us to both get past. But this is where it got a bit weird.

I tucked in front of the lorry but the Astra stayed out on the wrong side of the road for a good few seconds until the last possible moment, causing an orgy of flashing from the oncoming car - quite justifiably.

I can only guess this was some kind of weird attempt to make sure I didn't stay out and overtake the Astra when he pulled in, though that was never on the cards.

Hmm, I completed a marginal overtake the other day which resulted in my passenger squealing and the oncoming van flashing... However having reviewed the footage it still just feels marginal.

On the way home this afternoon, I followed a 206 into NSL road and wait to see if it's going to go over 40MPH. It doesn't so I go past, staying within the limit. As I'm going past it first puts on right hand indicator, then when I'm in front flashes headlamps a few times. I've looked at my dash cam vids & it looks ok to me so what upset him/her?
