Winter Tyres or AT's on a 4x4
Discussion
Dont want to get flamed for starting another winter Tyre thread...but there are that many on here its nigh on impossible to find one that compares winter tyres to AT tyres on a 4x4.
My Rangie's set of vredestein wintrac extremes will probably not get me through this years winter, so am i better off replacing them with more of the same (or similar) or going with something like a set of BF goodrich AT's or general grabber AT2's.

One point is the General AT2 is obsolete so it is now the AT. I have them on the Grand Cherokee. Fantastic in bad weather, only ever used them in light snow, Ice & very long wet grass & they've been fine. We haven't had deep snow since they were fitted. I use them all the year round. Mine are coming up for 3 years old & have around 6-7mm left, they start at 10mm. That is for around 32K miles. They are no noisier than the mix of tyres I had on earlier, which were more road orientated than the AT. They were £390 for 4 fitted, that is for 275/70 x 16 so a bargain as well
I had General Grabber AT2's on my old P38 Range Rover. Unstoppable in snow; I drove it in very deep snow. As for ice well I never had a problem but AT2's are studable and I had a pack of studs in boot just in case. A studded tyre will perform far better on ice than a non studded winter tyre.

I found BF Goodrich ATs brilliant ploughing across Salisbury plane and not bad on the road either. Road noise is minimal to, id buy again.
Was this in the snow/ice or just off road?BFG TERRANO said:
Good in snow also. Last winter was a good test for them and I was impressed. Some say not to push them in the wet but I never had any moments of worry with them.
IME BFG ATs aren't as good as GG ATs in the wet, although the BFGs were on a Defender and 235 wide and the GGs on a Disco and 265. I had some moments on the BFGs whereas the GGs have been utterly planted barring the greasiness recently. The BFGs seem utterly indestructible off road though.Bill said:
