Just don't use main dealers.

I have to laugh when my workmate complains about a £1000 bill for his 118i.
And if your car has a main dealer warranty?

When you said second-hand I was thinking of cars outside their warranty.

Thanks for tip. Good price too. Ours diagnosed by dealer listening to it from a cold start & price quoted accordingly. Im in London but surely its not double the cost & if indy still sounds horrendous I may use your figures if thats ok. Not actually my car it belongs to a friend.

Main dealers!! banghead
Death rattle is an official recall now. At least in the USA. Take it up with the dealer before stumping up any cash. I've heard of refunds being given too.

Porsche 968 roof skin panel, £900 + vat, Scrap yard from a 924 £100
That's a really useful comparison, like I steel old bald tyres from a tyre depot because they want £100 each for new. That'll teach em.

Nissan Navara sunroof glass, just to but just the glass £1200 + vat, £900odd with my trade discount. Only available as a dealer part.

Ahhh but that's in the US, I believe there was a class action against them recently.
Here in the UK it's still a case of " sorry guv, don't know what you're talking about "
If you catch it early, you can just change the tensioner, which is less than an hours work! Not done one myself but my mate did a few weeks ago, even he was surprised it worked!

Renault wanted £1200 forms timing belt change and dephaser pulley on my megane. I tried a few Indies and when they asked what a dephaser pulley was it didn't fill me with confidence the same as when I asked if they had a locking kit they asked if it was needed.

Main Dealers who offer fixed price belt changes seem to sting you on water pumps.
1,6 16v?

When was this? I've done a few of them, and I'm sure it's less then £500 with the water pump. Pulley has to come from Renault at about £100.

i have a newish car, first time in years i have to get dealer servicing

had it serviced, not too bad on price, looked at the break down of costs

they'd charged me £4 to clean the brakes. I'd only changed all of em the day before

the service man looked a bit shifty when i mentioned it. I guess they make good margins on this sort of stuff

Thanks for that snippet about US situation.

Phoned dealer again today & mentioned it, got a long silence then was told they would speak to me later today.

What I didn't mention is that car has only done 20k from new!!

£1200 for timing chain on 57 plate Cooper 'S'. that's doing the 'death rattle'. Common fault, but will Mini give a discount?

Like fcensoredk they will.bandit
Honestly, why should they give discount?

If you dont like the price go to an independent, or do it yourself.

Took my Audi A4 to a main dealer for a service and a few bits and bobs including front and rear pads. They called in the afternoon and said I could collect the car but they hadn't been able to do one of the jobs as a part was out of stock (bit of broken trim), could I bring it back the next day? Sure I said, as the dealer was near my office. I brought the car back the following day. Later that morning, someone else called me and said my pads were low, could they replace them. I said, which ones, the ones that were 9 miles old? "Errr, let me go and double check that...."

Do people really still think that using an independent invalidates their warranty?!?

Main Maser Dealer £340 including Vat,
Respected Maser Indi £350 PLUS Vat!
Respected local tyre place with latest Hunter 4 wheel alignment machine....£155 inc VAT.

Done any research Adz? Forums galore about this issue, apparently featured on TV & in the press.

Car has done 20k since new, levels always checked & serviced as recommend.

Mini have a big problem with these cars &, as I learned from another poster, the matter is subject to a full recall in America. I will happily pay for regular maintenance & replacements as needed but I feel a £1200 hit for what seems to be a manufacturing issue is unacceptable.

I think many do. Or at least that they'll get fisted on PX value after three years when they bring back to a dealership a car they bought from them, then serviced independently.

Prime retail stock has a book full of franchised stamps, preferably from the supplying dealer. Beyond that and residual value takes a hit accordingly - usually to a greater extent than the money "saved" by servicing a new car independently of the franchised network.

Ah ok, so Mini admit its a problem?

In that case I see your point, perhaps they should do better rates for it. But its not a surprise they dont, easy money.

Friend of mine had this happen. Out of warranty but had never been serviced or MOT'd anywhere other than a Mini dealer. They paid for labour and he paid £400 for parts. They said if it had ever been anywhere else, he would have had to pay the lot.

How did that turn out? The roof is different between 924s and series two 944s, which the 968 is, in essence.

The R56 is subject to a "campaign" not a recall. A recall is a safety related rework, a campaign is something a manufacturer can do at its discretion. Good luck with getting anything out of mini over here. The power steering failures of the earlier cars as well as suspension issues were far more dangerous and have been brushed under the carpet. Then there are all the exhaust valves that have burnt out due to a poorly designed cylinder head and the gearbox internals that are made out of dog st and cheese. It's only the tensioner that's the issue on your car, I believe it's about 25 quid and can be changed in around an hour.

means f all. You can take it anywhere you want under eu law. All they have to do is use genuine parts.

Not so. Extended warranties aren't covered by the block exemption. Look at the way that Porsche abuses the hold that they have over extended warranty customers.
