Done a fair amount of reading around and I'm pretty certain i'm going to go for a 745i or 750i, now just to find one in the right spec at the right price!
Try for a facelift if you can. All but the earliest '05 cars come with proper handsfree bluetooth instead of the daft BMW phone in drawer jobbie that the early cars came with, the navigation unit is the later version which can be updated to accept newer software and the latest discs with (after a bit of faffing) postcode entry, the iDrive is revised and the interior is a bit nicer (chrome instead of plastic on the heating controls etc). Plus the non-facelift looks like somebody punched it. HemiCommander said:
Of the luxury car options this is what I'd pick. I would have the most faith in the mechanical bits and I like the design.
For a luxury 4x4, Shameless plug link.
Another vote for the A8...a 4,2 V8 can be had in the pre-facelift (pre single grill) version; very elegant vehicle, in my opinion a bit more so then the single frame. For a luxury 4x4, Shameless plug link.
I went for a FFRR in August last year. It's a 2003 4.4 petrol Vogue with LPG (so actually quite cheap to run). Had around 100k on the clock when I bought it. Paid around the £8k mark. Only put 4k miles on so far but I love it. I have had plenty of Audis and BMWs but for cruising around the RR is a nicer place to be. It just feels special...we'll to me it does. No mechanical problems so far (touch wood!). First issue occurred last week - the stereo screen has gone blank but the stereo still works. I am working out what to do with this, probably an upgrade to the newer touch screen unit.
Got it serviced by my local LR specialist this week and was expecting 'the call' where he was going to tell I needed to spend £xxxx on whatever, but I was very pleased when the call confirmed that the full service had been done and nothing else needs sorting (other than the stereo).

indicates LPG.
i was in a similar position for you, traded my old E60 M5 for a more suitable family car for the mrs', now just needing a to the train station hack and back, not concerned about MPG, just quality and somewhere that is nice to be at 5:15am. anyway, ended up looking at and buying a 645i. picked it up last night. absolutely sublime thing for the money, wonderful place to be and all for £7.5k too, couldnt be happier.
