Out the two mentioned I would go for the Meg in Cup spec so its got the LSD. They are not exactly hard to live with for day to day duties either, it isnt an Atom!

Bit of a leftfield option, has your friend thought of a FD2 Civic, coming down in price now, this one is within budget http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/h...

They are quite good on the eye too

This.

You won't get a focus Rs for £15k

My money would be on a focus st3 mk2.5 and a few little mods, such as mountune or dreamscience

Has to be one of these. Hasn't got the straight line pace of a turbo hatch, but the engine is amazing and from what I've read, the chassis and handling are exemplary. Not the fastest thing in the world for £15,000, but if your friend cared about that he wouldn't be buying a hot hatch.

This isn't a hot hatch.
Finished that for you.

My dad owns a Megane (Not RS, but still...)
Really well put together, he's not had a problem with it in the 18months he's had his.
Interior isn't a bad place to be either, no rattles.

If it was my money, i'd get the Megane.
They're not even built in the same factory are they?

Sorry I missed that.

Since we are doing left field alternatives here is my suggestion doing a bit of trackday action. I have to admit that finding one within budget will be tricky.

just a general principal, more focused cars are generally harder to live with for extended periods, which is why many people took scoobies over evo's as daily drivers
Fair enough, I haven't been in either but I'd be surprised if they are that different to one another, they're not exactly hardcore like the rally reps.

That Civic is a lovely thing it's true. Ad says 'Full Honda service history', being that it was never officially imported wouldn't most Honda dealers either choose not to touch it with a barge pole or not have a clue what to do even if the receptionist said 'Civic Type R servicing? Of course sir ill book it in for you now'?

If money's going their way I don't see why they'd care.

For the current mark 3 model they are built in the same factory.

I have been in a Megane RS250. Very impressive. Quick, handle well, grip well and enough toys:creature comforts for a daily drive...

Can't say much about the Golf but they don't float my boat.

Megane for me.

I was more worried about the dealership not having any documentation or information and the staff not having had any specific training.

Is it mechanically much different from the regular civic tyre r we get in the UK?

I'd take the best FN2 Civic Type R you could find for the budget before any Golf GTI personally, if you are looking at the Megane then a 3 door is clearly not an issue. The Civic will have an LSD and at that price range you could find a funky metallic blue or Champ White one.

Cracking car, great engine and gearbox, good fun to exploit and reasonable running costs.

Parts are available from Honda UK. Honda serviced my DC5 no issues at all. A good independent could service one, its the K20a engine as in the DC5 Integra. Not to dissimilar to a 'normal' engine found in UK Civics Type R's
