Ouch. Serious depreciation.

Yes, agreed M6 is different but the rest of them seem a bit uuuuurgghhhh. Can't put my finger on it
I know what you mean. The 6-series including the M6 did little for me then for some reason they started to appeal, now it's likely to be a future purchase, but it would have to be an M6. A similar transition thing happened with the E65 Bangle Butt.RenesisEvo said:
Indeed! The petrol V8s are equally surprisingly good, which is why I wrote 'i'.
Coupe: Urban / Extra-Urban / Combined (mpg), from BMW's UK brochure
640d: 40.9 / 57.6 / 50.4
640i: 26.2 / 47.1 / 36.2
Although on the strength of your data the figures are optimistic, I think a combined figure of 36 for the petrol V8 is still pretty good IMO. If I wanted a D I'd have to deeply consider a Panamera diesel.
640i is a turbo in-line six. 650i is a V8. I've tried both diesel and petrol sixes, and both are brilliant. I was particularly shocked by how good the 640d was.Coupe: Urban / Extra-Urban / Combined (mpg), from BMW's UK brochure

... I definitely wouldn't mind adding an M5 at some point if the current ones continue to fall in price at the rate they have been.
A far better used proposition than the E60 m5http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

Thanks, I need to stop confusing E63s with F12s. I've experienced an M6 CP, from the passenger seat admittedly so not much to comment on other than the soundtrack in the cabin was a bit flat (synthetic?). The interior is truly a lovely place to sit, and it goes very well, didn't feel like a turbo powerplant in the way it delivers and revs.TooMany2cvs said:
It's all very well saying "Well, yes, the list is £103k, but they're really only £80k" - but I'd suspect that a very large percentage of buyers are putting it through a business - in which case, the P11D value is still £103k...
Which has precisely nothing to do with depreciation.RenesisEvo said:

What mpg are you getting from the 640?
I havent reset it since i bought it. When first got it I'd stick it in eco mode, but that novelty quickly become boring! With no effort, mixed driving and "enjoying" the car, it has a 21,000 mile reading of 39.2mpg.
I checked the computer by measuring fill to fill a few times and it was pretty accurate.
I think for a relatively large GT car, over 300bhp, that's pretty bloody good.
Real word if you potter along at 65 it will do 50mpg+. Pretty amazing I think.

Not quite M6 territory, but I've noticed the prices of 7-Series are lower than I imagined, how about under £24k for a 730d with below average miles and almost a year's manufacturers warranty left? Dull, but as a quick comfy barge it doesn't seem bad!

I'm sorry, but no BMW is worth that money (£103k). They're no longer a premium brand imo.
I think you may be confusing the word premium with exclusive as BMW are and always will be a premium brand. Common and mainstream, but still premium. This depreciation lark has been going on for years, look at the recent Merc CL. If you can afford to buy and run a new 6-Series and you do, you're not going to be fazed by depreciation.
It's only now where jag have more than one model in the range which is considered up with the BMW/Audi/Merc offerings.
I don't get your annoyance with BMW?

Have you seen XJ prices? Whilst not quite as impressive as the example you've shown, I am suprised how far they've falling already. The Panamera is (irritatingly) holding onto its value rather well by comparison (I admit I've not analysed the difference in showroom pricing, due to options and discounts)http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

7 Series, S-Classes, etc. always suffer from massive depreciation. They are bought new by execs who are chauffered around and there's not that many people who are in the market for a second hand one of them.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

I don't think I've ever bought a car on the basis by what it's going be worth, when trade in time comes.
I just buy what I want and be done with it.
Easy to say when you're at either extreme - you're not going to lose much money on that 306 or diesel Focus, no matter what. The value of them is going to be tied to MOT length, or how much petrol is in the tank...I just buy what I want and be done with it.
Likewise at the other end it doesn't matter - multi millionaires can lose a fortune as soon as they drive off the forecourt in their brand new Ferrari FF and not give it a second thought.
For everyone else in the middle ground... being able to trade back out of a car without losing your shirt needs to play at least some part in the consideration of what you buy.
