In 2007 I bought a 1994 525i Touring SE with three owners and 202k on the clock. It was oxford green with grey buffalo leather and full sunroof. Been stood for 6 months and questioned whether it would even get me home. It did.

In 2009 I sold it to a work collegue with 230k and a little more worn but still workable.

Remarkably today I have bought it back, now on 246,200. The 16k in his ownership have involved daily short runs, so not the best for the car. However whilst feeling very old it still feels solid as a rock and everything works. Neither of us had any major mechanical issues.

Will give it a good clean and post in readers cars, but couldn't help posting to acknowledge the robustness of a good E34.

Don't know what I'll do with it yet. Getting it to 250k will probably be the challenge then move it on. Either way great to be reunited!

I've always fancied an E34. I thought the E28 was better looking but I think the E34 would be an easier prospect, especially with issues such as rust.

I notice a lot of people regret selling E34s after a while, a lot of owners become repeat owners... Makes me think I should keep mine indefinately, it's not as if it owes me anything...

I loved my 535i SE. As you say; solid as a rock, it could have done with less autobahn orientated gearing and yet even in a egg-shell footed cruise in the fuel crisis I couldn't get more than about 27mpg.

Well done for keeping track of it and for buying it back.

The e34 saloon and Touring was a fabulous car, much better than the Merc 190 in robustness and build quality (I know as I've owned and driven both). In fact I've owned two e34's and have owned a few later BMWs to present day and I still thin the e34 was massively over engineered and the best built BMW ever made. It is (to me) one of the nicest looking BMWs ever made too. It has no badly proportioned lines at all and is very much the big daddy to the e30 which was also a great looking car.

Have you seen how few there are for sale on here these days and how much they are fetching?

Whilst it has tax and mot they are both short, so with the previous owner upgrading he was happy to just get rid, he almost scrapped it!

No idea what I'll do with it have no need with plenty of other cars around me.

Anyway, looking at service history I was impressed to be reminded of the following mileages of services all BMW main dealer up to 184k
