Meanwhile, in the real world...
Perhaps the difference is I've got 3rd party insurance... it'd be in my own interest not to let s dismantle it or lift it.CampDavid said:
It was more that you're suggesting having someone watching it 24 hours a day which I found a little mental.
There is absolutely no way I'd leave my car abandoned in a st area without someone watching it. But like I say the insurance is an issue for me - I can't get fully comp insurance so theft of an already damaged car would just be making a bad situation worse. Would it realistically take you longer than a day to get it removed? £100 x 3 people on 8 hour 'shifts' would be worth it for the peace of mind on a £60k car surely??
If my insurance told me to leave the car where it is I would do as they say - having first removed all personal possessions from the car and taking a few photos of the car for future reference.
It is their responsibility to recover, dispose of, or fix the vehicle after instructing the owner to leave it there.
The owner will pay their excess and a payment will be sent to the owner - what criminal acts occur to the vehicle after that first phone call are of no concern to the owner.

If the car is already effectively a write off then you are only putting yourself out of pocket and wasting valuable personal time for absolutely no gain.

That's the thing about £60k cars - they are generally purchased by people that have fully comp insurance and can pass these sort of problems onto the insurance company.

Its a car, a common car, hardly worth guarding it like the fking ark of the covenant!

This is/was my fathers car. I agree with all your comments but please read on as to why the car was left.
He could see the kerb all the way under the bridge so presumed the water level was low. Half way through the puddle the car stalled, water up the exhaust without high revs, etc. Dad opened the door only for the water to poor in!
He contacted his insurance company immediately who said there is no way they can move or touch the car due to the water being contaminated! They would wait until the water level reduced due to health and safety. Well it has not stopped has it!
We presumed it would be a write off due to the water getting into the electrics etc but waited to hear any news.
Unfortunately the area of Lynne/ Chertesy is renowned for pikies/travellers which thanks to not paying any taxes have bought houses in the area. Word would have spread pretty quickly and Dad went each day to check on the car. He was alerted that the tracker had gone off but then the signal vanished. He went check after that again only for the car to have gone!
It looks like the car was moved into the inlet where it could not be seen. It was then stripped to how you see the pictures now. It is disgraceful but that's life!
Mmmm. if it was that deceptive a puddle then frankly I'd have expected seventeen other drivers to have been similarly deceived and a whole jam of cars stuck in it.He could see the kerb all the way under the bridge so presumed the water level was low. How long could it have took to organise someone to come tow it out? Though if you're already confident its a write off and the insurance company clearly don't care then I suppose its their loss... just let it get robbed and definitely seal the deal on a car you don't want back...
In an area that's flooded? Possibly a few days. Consider that the insurance payout would only cover it's current value (and possibly after some backwards and forwards with them) unless they had gap or new for old, and then increased premiums for a big chunky claim, not sure many would want the agro of this perceived benefit you seem to think the claim would bring.
Sitting someone with it 24 hours a day is barmy, it's a bit of metal (although granted a nice bit) but is an irreplaceable mclaren f1 or ferrari f40 etc no it isn't.

If that was my expensive car immobilised in a bad area I'd be making sure someone with a mobile phone was permanently around it to avoid exactly this. Unless of course the preferable outcome was for it to be stolen...
What for? It's his insurance company's problem. Why would you want a broken, full of st and piss £60k car for?Leptons said:

Read above - if it was mine it'd be 3rd party insurance... so I'd rather have a slightly broken car than a raided car (if you can even call whats left of it a car!)KFC said:

But you wouldn't have an rs5 on 3rd party only.
My other cars are all insured on that basis - they're registered in one country and reside in another so I have no choice. Herbs said:
What countries are we talking?
I find it hard to believe a broker couldn't sort out a policy that would cover you abroad. Are you saying that you have a Gallardo Spider and Cayenne GTS uninsured against theft???
Yes, they're uninsured for theft. Its not something Im perfectly happy with but given the choice of 'risk it' or 'dont own it' I've went with the former.I find it hard to believe a broker couldn't sort out a policy that would cover you abroad.
