I realyl like the merging of unadulterated turbo'd V8 with the green-pary friendly electric power, it's an excellent interpretation of the "hybrid" car that, for so long, has been a byword for "boring and slow and treehuggy"

Iw as wondering, how long could you travel at, say, 40 or 50 mph under electric power alone? is there a mode to just use the leccy motors? Say if you wanted to sneak out of the neibourhood at 4am on a summers sunday morning without waking up everyone
i like clarkson's description of it as a "weaponised hybrid system"

What a car, and a great write up - so much better than Clarkson on Sunday
Whilst top gear has turned into some what of a pantomime,i still enjoyed watching Clarksons review if even it was more in laymans terms.Always rely on Harris for the technical jargon!

Why was the competence of this car ever in doubt?

Admittedly some of the marketing was questionable, but I think the smartest thing McLaren did was not to post a ring time. It's binding somewhat these days. I happen to think the ring time is irrelevant.

The raw statistics are in it's favour, but to take into consideration the utter ruthlessness of the 12C and it's no surprise that the P1 is an active, intelligent and ground breaking car. It's innovative and is a interpretation of what ICE and hybrid power can do when in unison. Outstanding...and British.

I'd say more to do with not giving Ferrari a target lap time to 'beat' by whatever means necessary.

They have form and McLaren know it, there will be a video of the full lap somewhere, i'm sure it is spellbinding, but they aren't going to release it until Ferrari shows their hand.

I do worry that the stand off will never get broken though, why would they? both cars are sold out and the PR keeps on coming, we are still talking about it, aren't we!!!
Damn right ^^^ That's my guess too.

LaFerrari on paper has the firepower. The 918 has set the benchmark, given the spec of the P1 its hard to understand how it couldn't be quicker in the right hands/balls? (perhaps the biggest differentiation) My money is on the Ferrari not being as quick, suspect Italian style to have compromised all out performance somehow, after all it isn't an attempt to "make another F40" is it.

I was with Steve Mole Motorsport with Duncan Tappy back in '04 - Good to see his talent has got him somewhere - he was quick back then.

Looks fecking awesome the P1, although I think you'd be mad to think that the LaF was going to be anything other than completely spectacular as well.

I wish they'd stop posturing, I couldn't give a toss about who's quickest on the Ring, unless they are challenging 6.11 it makes no difference at all, you'll only get some loon (Vergers and von Saurma I'm looking at you) in the latest superhybridturbonutter Radical or Donkervoort etc on cut slicks with proper wings to take the road car time away from them anyway.

Ferrari would cheat anyway.

So wheres the berk from the 918 article that kept banging on about how the 918 was faster etc etc when he drove it compare to the P1 he had supposedly driven as well. Notice he's not so quick to pop up now.
Funny, I thought that as I read the mention of the 918 biggrin

Great car and good write up, looking forward to the vid now.

There is a 'leccy only mode - I think you can do 6-7 miles on it. The point of the P1 is not to drive it around on the leccy, use the full systems together to deliver.

"Sneak mode possible"hehe

I suspect that if you have enough cash to have one of these then the electric range will probably just get you to the end of your driveway.

I wonder if you can lock it into electric only mode for valet parking?

Does it matter? Does anyone care? The performance of these cars on the road regardless which is slightly quicker will make no difference at all as you simply wont be able to extend them on the public roads.

Even on track, the performance is stratospheric, I can't imagine many (any?) of the buyers of either car are really willing to go balls to the wall with it and see what it can do.

So that leaves it as an object of desire to everyone else. Frankly, the Ferrari looks like horse st so it's a P1 for me!

99% of the buyers would never get even close to the posted ring lap times of these cars, i doubt even monkey with his huge talent could get close to them

with the exception of the owner of the Zonda 760 LH, he could be in with a decent shout

Epic! I'm so excited for this car.
I think that the F1 is the best (analog) car ever, and McLaren has to do really big things if they want to create a new hypercar, to be the best in the digital era.
But to recreate in 2014 what the F1 was 20+ years ago, I still think maybe it's not enough... The F1 had so quite some power over what Ferrari and Porsche's best had to offer.
Now the LaFerrari has more power than the P1.
Let's just hope the P1's technology/aero will make it a better car.
I really want McLaren to be back as a leader.

Many such hyper cars have valet keys, which can limit speed/throttle % etc, so it wouldn't be unheard of.

Some also have keys that allow access, but not start engine - for example to get it cleaned

Of course it does. Not for any tangible reason. But because both Ferrari and McLaren like to win. Especially against Ferrari or McLaren.

It won't effect sales. It won't effect anything at all. Except column inches and corporate bravado.

And for that reason it's extremely important.
