Why not just buy a coupé? It's the perfect stereotype for the Chelsea Tractor which it so obviously is trying to be. (IMO)
Because it will feel completely different? Why not just buy a coupé? It's the perfect stereotype for the Chelsea Tractor which it so obviously is trying to be. (IMO)
What is wrong with the Chelsea Tractor?
Someone who drives a classic Rangey round Sloane Square is OK, but if that person buys a modern looking 4x4 they are then ......what??

Ignoring the "ugly stick" comments which I truly don't understand, the X6 is a remarkable car. It seems to suffer from JC not liking it and everyone jumping on the same bandwagon. The rear window may slope, but so do all coupes. If viewed as a coupe with superb visibility, great handling and obscene power it just makes sense.
But it's NOT A COUPE.Edited by Simond S on Thursday 6th March 10:40

I somehow doubt that it will feel in anyway different to any x5/6/5GT becasue they're basically the same interior. What is wrong with the Chelsea Tractor?

Because it's a "Chelsea Tractor" If you want to go offroad, fine, then I see the point. But to drive on the road and around towns? Why not buy an estate?
If you want 4wd, buy a 4WD estate?
It's not like their handling is any good either.
YAWN....
Who thinks "Hmmm, the X5 is too big, but the X3 is too small... if only there was another option"
Saying that, I bet there are loads of people who like this. Otherwise there would be no market for these soft roaders. I hope I never have the displeasure of meeting any of them.
Utter crap.

or any lifestyle product that is not quite as good as other products, but looks good and gives a feel good factor.
Such as a BMW " X6 40D with DMS mapping"?A Rolex, not a Daytona more likely a Submariner or sea dweller

Indeed. The ability of the German marques find ever more niches in the market never ceases to amaze me and BMW are the worst offender. I've never actually seen a 3 or 5 GT on the road!Who thinks "Hmmm, the X5 is too big, but the X3 is too small... if only there was another option"

But the drive in a 4wd estate is very different to in a 4x4. Because it's a "Chelsea Tractor" If you want to go offroad, fine, then I see the point. But to drive on the road and around towns? Why not buy an estate?

Some may prefer the estate while others prefer the 4x4.
I don't know why people find it so hard to comprehend that others may prefer something different to them?
Bizarre.

For a start the 5GT feels like a 7 series but has more practical load space, and it feels noting like the X5 to drive, and for many people they don't like the styling of the X5 but may like the styling of the X6, so that is what they buy. A 4WD estate feels very different, if you prefer a more relaxed, upright driving position then am estate is not going to cut it.
I take from those comments you haven't owned a 5GT, X5, X6 or for that matter a 4WD estate?
I see you drive a Fiat Grande Punto?
Why?
What made you buy that?
There must have been some reason you bought it?
What is the point of it?
The regular Punto feels sharper, if you needed a bigger car why not buy an estate?
Why buy an oversized hatchback and then one that is meant to be sporty?
Why not just buy the basic model with 15" steel wheels and enjoy it for what it is?
Your choice of car makes no sense to me at all.
I drive a Mercedes ML. Why?
Because it is wallowy, comfy, is great for a stereo install, makes me drive slower and can gobble up 3 mountain bikes, myself, my wife and my son and our dog (who is a Weimaraner) without having to have a bike rack put on.
It however could not be classed as 'fun'.
So we tend to have another car as well, currently a 2.8i Z3 that I am doing up.
Unfortunately it is a Cab which spoils it somewhat, but it is raw, quick, appreciating (so I don't mind if it sits not getting used) and very cheap to run and maintain.
If I had to go down to one car, something like the X4, Macan, SQ5, GLA45 would be pretty high on my list, because having had fast estates for the last 15 years (535d, S4, 335i, Brabus E Class etc. etc.) I have found that they are the biggest compromise, they are not a sporty coupe and they are not a nice relaxing raised 4x4, they are about as st as they come in regard to shape only beaten by the middle aged, middle management saloon. Although the hot hatch, that is then made much bigger, could well take that top spot thinking about it.
Of course most of that is tongue in cheek, but I am grateful for all the options when it comes to cars, choice is a great thing, I would hate to have no choice and everyone be driving around in the same sort of thing as each other, which seemed to be the case when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. It was horrible.

And Discovery drivers are not wannabe mountain rescuers or some such?
I don't know about that but I bought mine to go off-road & travelling in. gizlaroc said:
People buy things because they like it, whether that be for practicality, looks or just because 'they do'.
Not who, or what, or when, but why?/jamesbondbaddiemode

Of course we can have an opinion, it is human nature to judge others buy what they wear, drive, how they talk etc.
I just don't get why "God that is ugly" is not enough, to then say "I would love to see what other objects of bad taste they have bought" says more about the person saying it imho.
I think there is a wider point about the kinds of cars BMW (and others) are now making and why. To understand why they're making hideous "faux-by-fours", you have to look at who they're aimed at.I just don't get why "God that is ugly" is not enough, to then say "I would love to see what other objects of bad taste they have bought" says more about the person saying it imho.

I must say I find your position a little strange. - Why do you have to be "perfect" to have an opinion?Clivey said:

People who like them I expect. You really are a judgemental aren't you??
That comment sums you up I reckon.

If you can't stand the heat...
For the record, I do understand why someone would choose an SUV as an everyday car...but the current trend for building the biggest pile of blinged-up junk possible (and I'm not just talking about SUVs) is having a detrimental effect on manufacturers, meaning that us enthusiasts simply can't get the cars we'd like any more.
The original X5 was fine; the X4/6 though? Awful. It tells you a lot about BMW's current direction / who's buying when they'd rather give us the X6M than a N/A manual M5 without speakers playing a fake engine note.
