In Holland Park today, rust bubbles on the arches, dents, plus a passenger seat covered in DIY equipment.
Owner probably richer than God
It's a great area though, well I suppose anywhere is where you remember it fondly. But I can remember the changes: my mum had a top floor flat nearby for years. And sometimes she'd retreat to her room when me and my mates returned there, wrecked after closing time, hoping to catch MOTD. One of my mates thought best to offload his guts but was fleet thinking enough to pull up the sash window and drop it to the garden down below. Loads of shouting and swearing ensued, as I think he had interrupted a BBQ in the garden flat. Then there was pounding on the door and Martin Amis (the writer) was there waking my poor mum up. The neighbourhood was a-changing, I thought: gentrification!
If I can nitpick though...considering the car - back to the Bristol Blenheim/603? - is no spring chicken, then reference antiquity. Reference Croesus. Richer than Croesus
"That if the tresor of Cresus
And al the gold Octovien,
Forth with the richesse Yndien
Of Perles and of riche stones,
Were al togedre myn at ones..."
From me...
Whilst on my way to pick up the car from yet another extended stay courtesy of Daimler - word to the wise, AMG ownership is a vocation: you do it for the love of it, not with one eye on your wallet - I saw this lovely D3 biturbo. Its great to see a company like Alpina with a very well honed niche, continue to survive, thrive and almost turn their products into the sensible, alternative, option. Their P&L over the past decade must have shown an interesting upward trajectory. I'm sure Seek will be along to set me straight...

Tigerkoi, my old stomping ground too and my son is named Kingsley after the father funnily enough.
Croesus was my first choice of reference but I think you carry it off with more panache
That's brilliant! Just shows how small the world sometimes appears to be....Croesus was my first choice of reference but I think you carry it off with more panache
I've never read anything by Amis Sr, but 'London Fields' is the only book I've ever bought twice. Its so rich in texture and detail about the streets we both know so well, it just comes alive. A great place to grow up. You'll tell me you went to St Charles primary or Fox next...
Great name for a lad by the way.

Eloquently put as always. How I'd love to hear your stories over a beer by an open fire.I must try and deliver well why Alpina holds a very dear place in my heart. I will own one of their products before I'm no longer for this world.

Anyway, I'd have an E63 B6S convertible for a week on the continent, and this, below, is just perfect for those halcyon days when you want to just get in, enjoy the falling sun, and just drive...
Alpinas are for people who know what they are doing. They ain't for ingénues.
