CL 55 AMG ***CL 65 AMG
2001 303
2002 607
2003 1379
2004 611
2005 486
2006 182 ***52
SL 55 AMG ***SL 65 AMG
2004 5217
2005 1542 ***651
2006 748 ***390
In the above numbers, which are AMG Lounge US production numbers, you can see that the SL was a more - relatively - ubiquitous car. And if you think that of the US world production perhaps a quarter, maybe a fifth of that, will end up on UK shores, then you won't see too many. As great as the SL is/was, the CL, W215, is the apex predator, the tiger, to the SL's leopard amongst Daimler's big cats. To further narrow it down, a twin-pipe CL55 means it's the earlier NA 5.4 engine, which means, 2001, 2002 etc. So if you de-dupe all that, then the car above is one of perhaps 80-120 (I think) destined for the RHD market.
Ever watch the Dave Chappelle skit where he takes off Rick James?
"Goddamn! Cocaine is one hell of a drug!"
...well that's how I feel about my long lamented '55. Anyway for those who don't know Ed Bolian took one and kitted it out and now holds the US Trans-Continental record: 28 hours and 50 minutes.
"Goddamn! The CL55 is one hell of a car!"

Looks like a completely standard, utterly rubbish diesel with a random Brabus sticker on the back.
There's an even worse Merc abomination that parks near my office. Clearly a diesel SL but he has added red brembo front calipers and the entire SL 65 black series bodykit. It looks really shoddy and must be hilariously slow off the lights. Four enormous tailpipes and they must sound hopeless and just pour out black smoke.
Why bother???!!

Whilst on my way to pick up the car from yet another extended stay courtesy of Daimler - word to the wise, AMG ownership is a vocation: you do it for the love of it, not with one eye on your wallet - I saw this lovely D3 biturbo. Its great to see a company like Alpina with a very well honed niche, continue to survive, thrive and almost turn their products into the sensible, alternative, option. Their P&L over the past decade must have shown an interesting upward trajectory. I'm sure Seek will be along to set me straight...
It has a quaint feelgood factor going for it which much reminds me of the postwar positiveness of Europe.
Regrettably no interesting car pictures...
I don't have the latest annual report at hand but I've quickly thrown together what was available.
Most interesting is the clear impact of the financial crisis.
Also, the gross margin is certainly not excessive...

Quick phone pic of this fabulous Vantage on Leeds Ring Rdd. One of the first versions I believe - though happy to be corrected
Seriously. What's with some posters on PH these days. Just send the pic to the Police with a note. Here I am breaking the law, because I saw a rare car for the internet thread
