RE: BMW M5 (E34): Catch it while you can
Discussion
Outside of fuel and insurance if doing 6,000 miles a year I was spending close to £2,000 on mechanicals etc. The annual valve clearance check is vital and not to be missed....and with anything approaching 20 years of age look out for rust on, under or inside the car. Finding a good mechanic is hard, but finding a decent bodyshop is way harder.....it has to be a classic specialist these days. Also some trim parts are no longer available and many have been poorly cared for even those selling for £9,000 or more.
Owned 15 years now, applied over 50'000 miles to it's total mileage.
Never had a mechanical failure or breakdown.
It's done epic road trips, a dozen ring laps (including 4 up laps for fun),
Autocar sideways challenge, How Fast? time trials.
Everything.
Now semi retired but seeing as it's nearly Spring, coming to a Sunday service near you.
Never tire of the big six.
Last of the hand assembled ///M cars, mine even bares it's maker's signature under the bumper.

Absolutely epic. Nice to see that one has been 'properly used'.Never had a mechanical failure or breakdown.

The E39 is slightly softer (especially when compaired to the 3.8 E34 with EDC dampers),
Slightly heavier, but countered by having lovely torquey V8 sound track.
It's said that in compairing E39 to E34 it's like the same engineers designed both,
But those same engineers were 10 years older hence a slightly more mature driving experience.
Please don't get me started on the E60.
