Everyone seems to spend MILES more than I do.
£250 a year, tops, to keep something sheddy rolling.
Parts are pennies, and the nuts and bolts are simple.
Haha don't say that! £250 a year, tops, to keep something sheddy rolling.

It depends on the model, and whether you want to make the car better (as I have decided to do with mine). Parts for old mercs at least seem to be very reasonably priced, I am not sure about other brands.
Discs and pads on the Audi A8 were 2-3X the cost of those on the merc.
So, after all these years...what Smoker Barge, in the 1-5 large band, is actually "best"?
What gets your vote?
Throwing all reason and rational 'Real World' thinking to the wind, I'd say within this budget, it's probably the BMW E38 750 for me.
I know I couldn't live with the fuel bill...but if someone else was paying?
How about you? What's your fav?

£5k gets an awful lot of good, low mileage W220 S500. It can even get you into S55 AMGs.
On the other hand, X308 XJRs are stonking value and unlike any of ze Germans to drive.
If I were paying the fuel bill - S320 CDi or possibly an S350.
If fuel wasn't a consideration a CL500 or even 600 would be under serious consideration (as well as a good supply of brave/anti-bork pills). I don't honestly think any one car could be classed the best - it's all subjective and depends on our individual needs.
Mind you, a friend of mine has just bought a 2004 E60 530d for £3k. Tidy, with good history. Perhaps an E60 is the way to go?

Make mine an e32 750 or a W126 560 please if someone else is paying!
Oh, this is naughty... the bork potential. £300 off budget. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

You can spend the whole £5K...or spend just £1K and pocket the rest to spend on daily living expenses, car war chest, hookers, gambling, booze, drugs (including bork pills)....
You can be rational and take your daily needs into consideration or not...just as you please or see fit.
But you can only have one!

Heart: The best X308 XJR I can find within budget.
Head: W220 S320 CDi facelift for £3,500ish and £1,500 to sort any minor faults.
Come back to me in an hour when I'll have changed my mind again
I'll just leave this link here

Fuel costs aside, the 'best' IMO is a £5k C215 CL600 or a £3k W126 560SEL.
ALL things comsidered, the 'best' is a £1200 110,000 mile E39 528i SE Touring.
IMO.
In the Real World, I'd agree...except I'd push it out to an E39 540i Touring as the costs between a 528i and 540i Touring are pretty marginal.ALL things comsidered, the 'best' is a £1200 110,000 mile E39 528i SE Touring.

The one that I had could do just about everything really well...and at realistic costs.

I'd like to say I don't believe it...but I'm struggling to find concrete evidence from the ad to refute the claim!http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
I've only ever had one barge and I bought it before I discovered this thread (for £2750 in early 2010). I'm not sure it's the best but I have fallen into spending more on it than it's worth, so it's worth something to me at least. It's been running superbly on our family holiday in Snowdonia so I'm currently very pleased with it...
Happy Easter Barging!

But I agree, it looks like 100k if my E38 seats were anything to go by.

Here's a quick update on this 540i/6 Touring that first featured in volume 2, way back in December 2011. I bought it from olly755 in early 2012, when it looked like this:
Two years and almost 20,000 miles later, it now looks like this:
I've decided not to add up how much I've spent so far - that way madness lies. I do know that I've worked my way through almost all the common e39 and 540i issues, and that hopefully I'll now get a few years without any four-figure bills - fingers crossed.
It's a great car - the freshened suspension, lighter flywheel and 'simplified' exhaust make it very entertaining on roads like those pictured.
Why did you change the alloys. I really like the original set!Two years and almost 20,000 miles later, it now looks like this:
