RE: Civic Type R seen undisguised
Discussion
Nothing wrong with the way it looks. The finished version will obviously have passed Honda QC and might be a little toned down. The looks may even help it stand out from what is a fairly crowded market and/but by the same token may see it have a small but loyal following.
I fear it has other obstacles to overcome. I wonder what Honda's sales targets for this are?
What is the USP? Why have one of these over say, a Fiesta ST, or for the more discerning, a GT86/BRZ? I know the latter is not a hatch but there's a lot of competition about at the moment.
In the past, a Type R stood out. High revving N/A motors because that's what Honda believed in and everyone else could GTFO. That was a USP.

It does look like it's crashed through a branch of Halfords but then again, so did the Megane R26.R and I'd happily drive one of those. Well, sort of happily. I know I'd look a tit, but I'd be prepared to accept that due to how good the car is to drive.

So many cars out there that don't scream FAST! TURBOO! BHP! Yet are fast, swift and capable. Why does it have to look so theatrical?
Because some people have the opposite opinion to you. Not everyone wants to drive a car that looks virtually the same as the ecobluetecsavetherainbow version; examples being golf gtis and current leon cupra. When a subtle looking car gets released people complain they are dull, when aggressively styled cars get released people complain they too shouty.
In other words there are other cars that cater to your opinion.

Do people really think that 4 exhausts would be OK if it had a V8, but not OK because it has a 4 cylinder? Is that really how car styling works - you have to know what displacement the engine is and/or its configuration. By that token do twin exhaust cars need MORE exhausts?
Utter cobblers.
I don't understand your post. 4 exhausts are OK when there's an engineering reason (and not to artificially mess with the sound either). All this tat does is add extra weight (even if the extra trim is fake it's still extra weight) and make the driver look like a knob. - It's just as sad as a biplane wing on a Daewoo Matiz.Utter cobblers.

I just wonder whether it needs these addenda to crack the 'Ring record though.
hideous...that front arch extension is bad enough but check out the rear one!
nothing on the door then out pops an extension on the arch in a big slab.
the comment about the Halfords trip is unfair to Halfords IMHO.
sometimes a great engine just will never make up for driving something that fell off the top branch of thwe ugly tree. you may always turn around at night as you lock it up but youll always be thinking what was Honda thinking!
the fast and furious brigade would even shy away from such a hash up.....even that generation have some taste.

Anybody over the age of 25 driving that is going to look a proper tit !!!
As I'm fast approaching double that age does that mean I'll have a pair then?!?I want to replace my DC5, thought about the FD2 but having an import is a real ball-ache.
So if this turns out to be any good, I'll be buying one and I'm looking forward to sticking my middle-finger upto the haters on here as I don't give a flying fk what you think.

And neither should you. Just a thought though: It may be one of the rare cases where the aftermarket ends-up being more subtle than the factory look.

Love it. If Honda are back on song and make it drive and go like it should, who cares how it looks?
No hot hatch other than a VAG car is remotely classy anyway. With Honda engineering surely it is in with a good chance of becoming a class leader?
Yeah, I'd happily shell out my hard earned for a car that looks so pig ugly No hot hatch other than a VAG car is remotely classy anyway. With Honda engineering surely it is in with a good chance of becoming a class leader?

Forgive me if I'm wrong but Pininfarina have never designed a Civic?
They did the Honda Beat but I'm certain not the Civic...
They did far more than that as unnamed "consultants". The relationship began in 1982. LJK Setright wrote about it years ago in Car. Honda designers were also sent to Pininfarina to work as interns for a while, the last design coming from that relationship being the DC5 Integra. They did the Honda Beat but I'm certain not the Civic...
