I still can't read:

"Fuel economy at a cruise is miles better than before - a genuine 30mpg - "

and

"The manual will hit 100mph in nine seconds dead, the DCT in 8.7 seconds."

without thoughts of witchcraft and sorcery. What an incredible achievement.
To put it into context for me, what would a typical 30 mpg car do 0-100, and what would a typical 9-sec 0-100 do mpg-wise?

I agree it is a wonderful feat of engineering, and quite a testement to modern fuel injection technology and strategy (lean burn etc), and the use of turbocharging (does the M3 have variable vanes? what other BMW tech e.g. VANOS is present?). I should think modern materials science giving exceptional materials will have helped reduce internal friction, as well as a contemporary oil specification?

It's absolutely right that the cost of the carbon ceramic brakes is off-putting. The problem for people (like me) with one of these on order is that there are no reviews of cars on standard brakes with which to make an educated call.

Chris, do you have any insight into the normal brakes?
I'll chip in here because I was on the same event as Chris; sadly there were no cars on the launch with the standard brakes, just as on the Lambo event for the Huracan there no cars with the standard passive steering. It's annoying but understandable; the manufacturers want to show off the cars in the best light with all the toys but it can be frustrating if you want to get an impression of the standard car.

While I'm here we were quoted a price of c. £6,300 for the ceramic brakes in the UK.

Cheers,

Dan

I suppose the 'Ring time will be set with a Ceramic braked car - any suggestions of how quick? 7:40?

If someone is not going to want spank the V8 because it takes too much effort in the real world how many people are actually going to spank the brakes in the real world to need ceramics? Er, none.

Talking of real world, if the torque makes it such a good steer then why not go the whole hog and buy this?

http://www.pistonheads.com/roadtests/doc.asp?c=100...

It's cheaper, it is faster in gear, more fuel efficent and the diesel motor even sounds like the new M3 !! wink

We are going to miss the engines in the C63 and V8 BMW very much so as time goes by I think. That made the Merc and the BMW stand out from the rest of the range. That was the halo effect.

This is too near the rest of the 3 series range. You can do your own with the help of some ecu/ chassis suppliers for a lot less.

The M4 achieved 7:50 around the Nurburgring. Isn't that the same as the CSL?

So as daily driver it's everything you'd ever need and more. As a weekend car... well, all the plus points becomes "that's nice" and then the engine.... I dunno. I think I'd prefer the v8 and at least be able to grin stupidly at the noise over it being an amazing shopping trolley. That said, I do a lot of miles so spend most of my time in traffic where it's all lost on me anyway (I saw the twitter pics of the engine bay and suspension and it's really very special).

I've been looking at E92s for over a year now but can't commit. The new M4 is prettier in my eyes and has that list of stuff. Maybe I'll wait a few years.. and then still get the v8 :P

I didn't have any problem with the throttle response.
You can always trust Harris to look past the stigma with the new engine and be objective.

I'm happy.

I'd still take an NA though.

The M3 for today's environment, well done BMW.
except for the sound, why do BMW M division have so much trouble making their cars sound good and resort to scamming their customers with speaker nonsense when AMG have no problems what so ever

the M4 is seriously tempting thou

Looks good.

What I don't get is, with probably 95% of owners never venturing on a track, why is the 'comfort' setting still hard?

I would have thought you would have a 'bumpy UK road waft' setting, 'sporty decent B-road' setting and 'hard as nails track' settling?

Instead we get a 'bit uncomfortable', 'more uncomfortable' and 'use once to impress your mates agony' settings.

Completely misses the advantages to be had with adjustable suspension?

Can the suspension settings be 'remapped'?

plenty of turbo cars out their that sound good, not 4 pots ofc but with 5,6 or 8 pot engines, the RS6 sounds immense

Well I'll wait for that then.

I'm pretty sure that most tuners such as Birds can take a normal 335i and turn it into something close to the M3 for a lot less money. And it might sound better?
