They should build a race track somewhere in Britain designed purely for high speed driving, a big 5 mile oval or something, and charge people to use it. At the moment, people who want to drive flat out have no other choice but to use the motorways. There are dozens of tracks in Britain, does every single last one need to be tight and twisty?
Bruntingthorpe has a 2 mile straight, that do? Nobodies going to build a new 5 mile oval, or any other track for that matter, in the UK. The economics of it just don't work.

' Cyclists could be hit with fines of up to £800 for 'unauthorised cycle racing in a public place', and drunks could be slapped with a £4,000 fine for being drunk and disorderly.'

I better slow down on my way to work…. and pub crawls might become trickier.

Isn't it about time we also reviewed the "costs" being applied by courts too.

Watch any of those "Police Camera Action" type programs and the crims are always getting fined something silly like £127 in costs or something, even though it took 15 officers, 4 cars, a helicopter and a dog unit 4 hrs to catch them. I mean, even just paying the clerk of the courts wage should add at least £100 to bill for the hr of their time you waste!

Fines for people caught at 80mph and over?

So hat happened to the potential motorway speed limit increase to 80mph? The surely the 10% would still come in to play? scratchchin

I do hope that the police aren't pressured to pull everyone doing over 80 too, squeezing discretion.

No, a 5 mile oval which can be driven flat out all the way around. Rockingham on track days is not such a track, there are multiple slow corners and the straights are not that long (like on 1001 other tracks).
Milbrook has a fairly decent High speed ring. I managed 110mph on that :-)
How did you manage to drive on there? If they done track days on there then that would be the kind of thing I am talking about but when I looked into this a few years back they certainly didn't. On their website it says "track hire" with no mention of cost. I assume it would be far too much for the average man. Also only 110 m.p.h.?
I came to the conclusion there is nowhere in Britain where you can pay to do a few top speed, flat out laps.

Maybe if people learnt how to drive in the first place less accidents would occur. Don't recall being on any motorway in my driving lessons as a youf, or driving at night. Sure people generally can drive, but they aren't taught from the beginning about how to anticipate other motorists on faster roads like motorways, nor are they taught not to stop an empty bloody roundabouts.

All new drivers are st, the end.
I'm sure these days you are taught to pass the driving test, not how to drive. As to motorway and night driving, how far should people travel to experience these things while learning? The nearest motorway to me is about an hours drive away and go to Scotland now (June/July) and you will be having driving lessons after 11 pm.

I think that sounds fair and it won't affect me anyway just millionaires who get caught at well over 100mph.

2 miles then stamp on the brakes. No that won't do. Do you have to stamp on the brakes after 2 miles on the motorway? In reality, once you include acceleration and braking you will only be driving flat out for a very short period of time. I am talking about a track where you can drive at very high speed for prolonged periods of time (dozens of miles).

Until someone (the government?) does build one, they can't complain too much when people use the only possible alternative.

Yes!

At last a sensible change to stop all the budding Bradley's riding in the Pelaton and making a sprint break way four-abreast on the country lanes of Britain.

Thank you Lord, now we have something to yell at the lycra clad, self righteous minority whose padded arses are all you can see bobbing about on a Sunday morning drive through our green and pleasant land.

Sportives are not races, can't see it making any difference tbh.

You say it like it's absolutely essential that you get to drive flat out for 'dozens of miles'. It's not, and it's actually pretty dull. If you really feel the need then take a road trip to Germany.

Good point. Perhaps people should be made to drive on all types of roads within a certain mile radius of where they live, so the roads they are likely to most often use.

I personally have always lived nearer to a motorway than a crappy citycentre.

I was thinking much the same. It's why all my cars get at least one trip across the channel during my ownership.
