Bonneville Speed Week - Anyone been?
Discussion
It's such a blast. The drive on the salt is just bizarre. The start line is about 2 miles onto the salt, the pits are about another 3 miles and they go on for about 2 more miles. It's a massive place. We parked up about the 2 1/4 mile marker, side on with the RV and just soaked it all up. This year we're going to spend some time at the start line and the staging areas to see some of the motors close up before they set off. Not the same impression of speed as they are about 4 miles away when they max out but the noise should make up for it.

Pikes Peak is but a lame shadow of it's former self now it's all tarmac up to the top - a complete non-event now.
This is sadly true to an extent , however standing on the edge of a mountain watching the spectacle unfold inches away sums up the rush that motorsport should , almost on par with watching the once great RAC back in the Group B era .Edited by aeropilot on Thursday 24th July 14:54
I'll be there in a couple of weeks time.

Look out for the very pale Englishman in the large RV with a disappointed looking wife as she can't find any shops nearby.

Ditto!! I do love the big RV's.With regard to the question about the pits. Yes, you can access the pits. Last year we just drove straight in and weren't stopped by anyone so we drove the full length. One thing you'll realise is that people are so busy with their own cars, inpounds, tech areas etc that you can just do this without being noticed. There is a parking area losely marked out near the honey buckets but as long as you don't speed about or block anyone you'll be fine. We had a wander and met a few crews which was really cool. Got a few to look up this time as well but the place is so big its easy to miss people.

Also, you can view at the start lines and staging areas for all four courses so you can see the cars and bikes as they get prep'd and started up. We missed out on this last year but will have a drive to the start and watch some record runs first thing.
Do you have any idea what time of the day things get going?I'm travelling via SLC and am planning on being there for the 11th and (maybe) some of the 12th before the obligatory visit to Yellowstone.
The salt opens for crews about 5:30 and for spectators about 6am. They have an hour to prep for the return record run and start at 7am. Crews can leave cars in queue in the evening so there is not a lot to time between record runs and the normal runs. Racing continues till dusk, from 8pm everyone must be off salt.
