I love the Megane RS, have done since launch but I don't get how the price has ballooned from around 22K to 28K for a cup in 4 years. That's a bonker's price increase and now means a properly specced 275 is too close to the VW Golf R, which is in a higher performance league and the consummate all rounder.

Megane would be choice from these two.

The previous Megane was brilliant in Cup form, I sold mine a few weeks ago (replaced by a 996 TT and a Mondeo estate!!)

It is honestly the best car I've owned. it eclipses the Elise and Caterham I owned previously. I used it every day and had no complaints about the ride although my wife did. Its handling never ceased to amaze me and although it doesn't have the outright power to keep up with a really fast car in a straight line, the sublime handling would see it thrash many more expensive sports cars. On a track I would take the Megane any day above my Porsche

The new version looks a tad expensive but I hope to own a Renaultsport car again one day

It has gained 25bhp in that time as well. Tell me any item that has not gone up substantially in 4 years!

Anyone that picks that over a Megane 275 believes far too much in RWD, as that's the only thing the M135 has.

Engine? More powerful and sounds a lot better too.

I love Fast Renaults, credit where its due they consistently raise the bar for involving and fun Front wheel drive hot hatches.

But again, £33k for a top spec Renault is Golf R/BMW M135i territory and they are in the league above for performance and refinement, in my opinion.

The Renault Megane 275 and the Cupra 280 lapped the Ring faster than a M135I

Yes there is more to life than Ring times but you cannot argue that the BMW is in a different league.

No not different league. Just different. I can see why one would prefer a £26k M135i after discount. Which takes nothing away from the Megane as a sublime driving tool.

As for the Ring, it's essentially about the driver behind the wheel of either of those. A half decent pedaler will be a minute quicker in either compared to your average performance car road driver in the other...

While 30k is a lot of money, look at the cost of the cars immediately below and above the 275RS on the Nurburgring Lap Record List;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgr...

To purchase any of these other vehicles new you would need to fork out far more $$$$$.

So it comes down to a simple bang-for-buck calculation. The 275RS is a daily driver that will keep with a Nissan GTR (2008) on the track. Yet it is 50% of the price. Simply put, it's a no-brainer.

That's thinking about it in the wrong way. Why start with a basic 1.6l hatch at all? Why is no one making a "proper" desirable fast hatch? The rs3 is just an a3. The a45 is just an a-class. Of course people aren't wanting to pay huge money for them (although note - a good few still do).

A Ferrari 458 isn't a suped-up mr2 is it? (hopefully you get that point, stretched I know). These hatch backs are heavy because, at heart, they have to be sold for sub £20k to the masses. My point is, if someone developed from scratch a £60k, or even more, hatchback, which was actually special (not just hatchback special - the only class of car where the only measurable unit of quality is dashboard plastic), it would sell.

Someone should do it.
The simple answer is that there is no profitable market for such a car. If there were, someone would be making it. No offence, but global car manufacturers are pretty good at this sort of thing. It makes me smile when customers think they know something Ford doesn't biggrin

That is incredible when you look at it, I have to agree. It'd be the Renault for me out of these two, with the aforementioned dampers, how much are those going to cost, by the way?

Credit due, it took longer for the M135i to surface than I thought it would! biggrin

The Ohlins dampers are a £2,000 option too, FWIW.

Cheers,

No doubt these cars will be great fun to drive and probably offer good pound per punch value however they will depreciate terribly! Maybe a great used car bargain to be had though

I understand why PH,CAR and EVO all plump for the Golf R (Or this SEAT )because its close enough on a track or B road and better at the mundane.
Not sure we do!

Your car sounds like it'll be great too, great spec.

Dan
Sorry Dan, PH an honorable exception smile

It seems to me that the comparison between the Megane Trophy (Or R even more so) and the more rounded but less gifted opposition is very much like the GT3 vs M3 situation.

I can honestly say I've never read a verdict on any GT3 vs the contemporary M3 that effectively surmises the GT3 is clearly the better drive but the M3 is better because its got 4 seats, rides more softly and its quieter when you go to the shops. And its nearly as fast and very good indeed to drive and its got more toys and your mum will like it more and the kids can watch a DVD in the back.

I'm exaggerating to make a point but you see what I mean. If you want the best drivers car in this class there is a clear and obvious choice to make. Considerations about day to day practicality, equipment levels and the quality of the plastics should surely, for the enthusiasts among us, come lower than its ability to put a huge grin on your face as you take apart your favourite back road on a sunday morning.
