When I were a lad, I took a year old Saxo VTS for a test drive. There was a lot of play in the drivers seat. When I pointed this out to the sales man his response was. "It's like that to make the car feel more sporty."

I purchased a £10,000 car and was told that it had mechanical warranty and even produced all the filled in forms.
The car then gained a fault and so I called it in. The policy number did not exist so I rang the garage back and was informed that it had changed hands and 'it was a nightmare'.

I did also purchase a car from a back street garage and asked for a full MOT. It did have one, but God knows where from.

I have found most used car dealers to be dodgy as hell

one tried to sell me a Focus ST170 with a suspected knackered DMF, he tried to play dumb as nothing was wrong with it.

another, was so stupid to start a Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 CDi with yet again a knackered DMF, only this time it was ultra noisy, and was surprised when I just did a 180 and walked off.

another did not fix the rear suspension bushes on a Mondeo had wondered why I would not pay him.

In short, they will lie and cheat, buyer beware.

Of course nobody has ever lied to a car dealer about a trade in, or to a private buyer of their car, have they.

Well if you're all such clever folk why do you buy from car salesmen? can you not just source the cars yourselves and warranty them etc etc

We retro fit heated seats all the time, to all sorts of cars. We charge $500, cost to us is obviously less. I would have thought it would be easy to do to a Honda.

Not a lie that affected me but one that did make me wonder about the guy. I saw a Boxster the other week and when I checked the engine oil I commented on how it was spotless and had probably just been serviced.

When the seller came round from the front of the car to have a look (bearing in mind the dipstick is now back in, oil cap etc. back on) he seemed to look down around the oil filler cap as if visually checking the level from the side and agree with me on the colour of the oil. Either I'm being ignorant or he can see through solid objects.

Seemed strange considering he seemed a bit of a petrol head and had a 996 911.

That's the problem with used cars.
The seller part ex'd because
a - they fancied a change
b - they needed a larger/smaller/sportier/duller car
c - the exhaust is hanging off, it needs a service, brakes are down to bare metal and the dog was sick in it
I'm reckoning on at least 75% answer c.
