Would a 1-series coupé fall within this budget?

Or was the requirement for "coupé" for something with more sporty styling, rather than just strictly 2 doors?

Hyundai Coupe. Good ground clearance, small wheels, and quite softly sprung. Plus it's not an Audi.
It is not at all softly sprung, it's jarring. Cheap though.

Unusual option: Lexus SC. Later ones look slightly better, I think.

Is a Volvo C70 too big and barge like? Good cars!

3 door Mk1 Freelander. For your budget you could have seven of them and just use whichever one is working.

For your cash rather than finance I'd look at E92 Coupes.

GT86 / BRZ as in your OP or a Volvo C30 for a more hatch-like car.

I think german cars are out due to the lack of actually having suspension

A MK3 MX-5 on standard (ie: not sport model) suspension fits the bill, surely? 1.8 petrol is reliable, economical, dead easy to live with, can be bought outright for £6k easily and still looks new, should hold it's value reasonably well if you can hold off for a month or two and buy when the rains start. smile
Roadster-Coupe would fit the bill at 7k, not the easiest to get in and out of though.

Sounds like a fair swap

ETA

Honda Civics and Alfa 156s have that "hidden coupe" look where the rear door handles are concealed. When my sis was looking for her last car she had discounted the 156 as she didn't think it had rear doors.....

Dunno about that but every single road test mentions the unexpectedly awful ride quality.

Merc CLK?

Softer than an Audi...
CLK is a good option, W209 shape which you will get for a very reasonable price. I hade a CLK320 elegance for 12 years and it was solid and comfortable and oozed a bit of quality too. Rarer but good options are sunroof, Bose, leather for sub 3 litre engined cars and AMG body styling.

Yep I agree but seem to fit the requirements. Plus looks like it has decent ground clearance.
