Flemke - Is this your McLaren? (Vol 5)

Flemke, in the F1 when you have two passengers alongside, is there any sense of claustrophobia at all - a little voice saying, if we prang this thing, how am I going to get out?
No, never thought of it that way.For passengers it's claustrophobic, as there is not much width for one's shoulders. For the driver, there is always plenty of room.
Driver's main problem with two passengers is the noticeable weight difference.

I was thinking about colours for my VERY hypothetical F1 road car. (I didn't win the £77M Euromillions last night ) If anything, having ANY colour possible makes it harder.
Papaya is obviously historic, but I don't think it suits the road car. It's a little bit too flat a colour.
Yes I know model , seems no one has ever painted a road car in Papaya which is probably for a reason
It needs some darker areas (black or grey) to offset the Orange. (see F1GTR)
Kidstons is nice in black. Simple, classy
But it's a little "obvious" to have black. Though maybe having the strakes up the door silver to match the wheels would work.
White is interesting.
Again to me works, more as a HDF, (though this doesn't have the side skirts of the GTR) It reminds me of an un-sponsored race car.
Silver (I know what Flemke means with SIlver), but it does work imo
I really like "Joy" a sort of blue/green
XP5 looks good in BRG
XP4 is also great in Blue

Thank you for the images. Tastes of course will vary. The one thing I would say is that, with very few exceptions, F1 road cars always look better with dark or black wheels than they do with silver ones.
Oh, the other thing I'd mention is that XP5 is a metallic black-green. Some might call it "BRG", although I would not.
Cheers.

Oh, okay.
As I say, I have not driven all that many different cars built in the last 4-5 years, but of the ones that I have driven (including the modern McLarens), I think my favourites have been the 918 and SLS Black Series.
Interesting that. Must try to find my grubby mitts on a black one day, that's probably rather more achievable than getting into a 918! The orange one above has the high-rise Z1 mirrors as on Flemke's car.
IIRC that is chassis #071. I think it is still owned by the original German owner. I'll bet he's had some fun in it over the years! Well at least I hope he has!
Were there 4/5 cars with the Z1 mirrors made? I remember Ron Dennis has/had them on his?

- 040 - Flemke's
- 050 - Ron Dennis's
- 055
- 071 - the Papaya car
- 074

A pity I guess that they couldn't get the sleeker design study ones to work.
Although the way the mirror integrates into the a-pillar works really well. IIRC the cars have bespoke a-pillars too?

At least one, I thought two, of the five sets of high mirrors were retrofitted - the ones on both RL's cars?
Funny thing is that, when they were going for Type Approval, the testers told McLaren to forget it with the high mirrors, owing to a technicality in the way that the rules had been written. Gordon told me that that was just as well, as they didn't know whether they could even find motors small enough to fit inside the tiny mirror shells of the non-functioning Clinic Model launch car.

Great car. Just a bit wide for many British roads.
This is a common theme with fast Merc's IMO. SLR is enormous. GTS/GTR is the same! Give me a 911 or a fast saloon on a twisty (narrow!) UK B Road.
The other issue with the SLS is that the bonnet is so long that you, literally, have to inch your way out of a blind junction.
On the other hand, the upside is one of the most satisfying and evocative modern road cars ever made.

Correct - the pillars had to be reinforced to cope with the aero drag from the mirrors twisting the pillars.

Interesting. That surprises me somewhat as I would have thought that electric mirrors would have been sacrificed anyway due to the extra weight of the motors? After all, when adjusting mirrors one normally does it once and then that's that. Is/would a small rotary knob not be reachable from the centre seat? I have spent a wonderful 30 minutes driving the SLS on track and I'd describe the driving experience as if the Mercedes engineers wanted to make a modern V8 powered Lotus 7 with a roof. I'm not much of a driver but it felt very similar with the engine weight so far behind the front wheels, and you sit really close to the rear axle as you would in the 7. Couple with good driver feedback and adjust ability. Obviously I'd like a few hundred kilos lopped off the weight of the standard SLS (and end up with a £1m+ car) to get the feel even closer to the 7 but the SLS isn't as fat as some might think. The other issue with the SLS is that the bonnet is so long that you, literally, have to inch your way out of a blind junction.

Flemke, erm.. the styling of the Senna... errr... do you like it...
Definitely one I will have to judge in the flesh... that front bonnet and bumper, and the wing.

Flemke, Just wondering whether you would have any useful contacts which you could point me in the direction of with regards to your brakes? The carbon ceramics on my boss's SLR need replacing and he is loathe to pay the circa £35k being asked, so the car is just sorn'd and under a cover in the garage, which is a crying shame.
Alternatively, do MSO still get involved with SLR's to your knowledge? Anyone there who might be worth talking to?
