Nope, its an overpriced FWD shopping car.
Do you have "Front-wheel drive is wrong-wheel drive" as a tattoo? Is that a prerequisite to joining the RWD Till I Die club?

The cage is bolt-in, right? So you could remove it and create a mighty-fun van. driving

I've occasionally wondered if you could stick a couple of fixed-back fibreglass bucket seats in the back of one and make the front seats hinge forwards.

good cars, better than the new R to drive imo
How have you driven the new R out of interest?

I'd love a R26.R in Racing Blue or Lunar Grey one day

The cage was an optional extra so some don't even have them, just a strut brace

Am I right in my memory that if you have the cage, you don't have the strut-brace? Or did I make that up?

I love my one.. Just done over 6,000 miles and every mile felt like an event.

Great car, corners on rails, sounds epic from the Ti exhaust.. Just wish it had a little more in the straights.

If you have not driven one, you can't comment.

I [i]think[/] you're making that up

Pretty sure they still have the brace, though never looked at both side by side to know 100%

They either have cage or brace, never neither from the factory!

And never both? Or is there a brace element built into the cage?

The cage attaches where the brace would attach

Ah OK, thanks. I wonder whether that provides an appreciable rigidity gain. I guess they wouldn't have put it there if it didn't.

Not being funny but why do you care?

If there were some detail on a car that I always criticised and had no intention of ever owning I wouldn`t bother asking questions about it!

it`s like me asking about something in a Nissan Primera`s glove box or whether it`s possible to open the boot of a Mk3 Escort from the inside.

I understand that people are curious about details in 6 figure hypercars that they will probably never be able to buy but this is hardly the same!

In general, because I'm interested in cars. smile

Specifically, I was wondering whether it would be viable to retro-fit a pair of lightweight fixed-back bucket seats into the back, and then hinge the front seats so you could get to them. I suspect you could re-add much of the lost practicality without adding more than about 20kg. Probably not something I'd ever do myself, just wondering whether it would be possible without hurting the handling to the point that you might as well have just bought an ordinary R26 (which is, of course, already a fine handling car).

If people didn't comment on cars they don't intend to own, PH would be a very quiet, rather dull place. smile

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew the cage sat on the struts but didn't know if it was additional or instead of

Don't you mean uncompromised?
No. The car is uncompromising in its intention to be the ultimate FWD hatch and compromised as a regular everyday car through having two racing seats with harnesses, no radio, less sound deadening and so on.

I think that it is exactly this kind of thinking that has helped form your misguided opinion of the R26R, you are wondering whether it would be possible to mount some lightweight seats into the back of an R26R, then hinge the front seats?

PH is very naughty for bringing this subject up again, when are we going to have a religion forum to really get things going!

So if you wanted to create the best handling modern four-seater hot hatch that you could, what would you start with if not an R26.R, and why? Maybe it would be easier to strip out and lighten an R26 or even a previous generation RS Clio? No-one else seems to be able to get anywhere near Renault in terms of FWD handling these days, so there's not an enormous amount of choice without doing a lot of setup work oneself.

ETA: I don't really understand why you'd be so against the idea. Do you really think adding ~20kg, mostly at floor-pan level, would ruin the way the car drives? That's about a quarter of a tank of fuel and probably located in a better place than the fuel.

An R26. Best of both worlds then

The R26 feels some way behind the R26.R to drive though. How much would it cost to bring it up to R26.R spec?
