Are w124's still a good bet?

It's for a family member, so countryside plus dog and short commute.

You won't get a 124 Mercedes for the budget you've set, although you'll find a reasonable 202 c class estate for this money.

Focus ST170?

Reliable, handle well, and very cheap to fix if it does go wrong.

As rare as hens teeth, especially at £1k.

I'll suggest the Volvo V70. Just check for electrical glitches and suspension knocks.

My last 2 sheds have been a 2.0 Mondeo Estate and now a 2.4 Volvo V70 Estate. Both well under 1k.

Indeed they are. Which is a shame, I'd got one factored into my plans for a couple of years time. The price isn't an issue, but availability will be even more so by then.

Mondeo for the win here.... Big, fairly reliable and plenty about in your price range.

I would consider the following:

Volvo 940/960/850/v70
Saab 9-5
Rover 75/MG ZTT
Mondeo
Subaru Legacy/Forester

For a bit of performance I would go with an 850 T5 or R model or a 9-5 Aero - but depends what is important to the OP - comfort, mpg, reliability, load lugging, awd??

You can, I bought the beauty in my profile just over a year ago, but you'll spend money on it later if you buy at that price.
Great cars, and fantastically practical. Well made out of quality parts, but they are all getting old now and expensive things wear out. Still if a car only needs a new driveshaft every 200,000 miles that's not too bad is it?
The 3 litre drinks a lot. Commuting would get expensive fast.

When we bought the Saab, I found that a lot of the cheap German stuff was overpriced for condition and photographed in dodgy looking housing estates.

Civic aerodeck vti.

I'm slightly biased, but mine hasn't missed a beat, 100% reliable (up to now) and fun 8k redline when the mood takes you. Comfy for family/daily duties, but dynamic enough to keep me happy, and I regularly give it a thorough work out.
