spending the hours pounding the motorway network, i often see purple tubing adorning the central reservation within roadwork sections. (most recently m1 j28-32 and j39-42). there is miles of it! at times this is broken / not joined fully, and there appears to be 5-6 strands of cabling in there.

anyone in-the-know enlighten me as to what this is, what it is for - data / power??? it never seems to distribute anywhere, only from end-to-end, often miles apart.

With the move to concrete central barriers, which usaully mean the whole of the central area is concrete. The cabling to the central matrix signs etc often needs to be carried on the top of the barrier

Different companies use different colours so they can be identified in the ground easily. Or on the top I guess.

I dont know who does purple though, maybe an energy company

^^^ this. The colour coding is for whats in the pipe, not who owns it. For instance I think gas is yellow, water is blue etc.

yes
There were purple tubes being laid along the verges of the M4 last time I used it several years ago, about the time they were putting up the matrix signs.

I did wonder at the time whether all the "comms" were necessarily motorway related. (/tinfoil hat) smile
