The mechanic I use, to be fair to him, is really good.

Well priced, knowldegable, really flexible and so on. Its kind of a 'backstreet garage' with just 2 staff.

The last few times I have broken down though I have really been buggered by lack of a courtesy car.

My mechanic does have a dodgy old courtesy car available but its not a sure thing (and it stinks inside).

Therefore I am thinking of finding a backup garage which has a better avilability of courtesy cars available.

I am guessing though that said garages will probably charge a bit more.

I wonder how others find using courtesy cars. Do you only use a garage that offers one? Does it normally cost more?

Do garages promise courtesy cars but never actually have them?

Bit of an open ended quetsion i know but grateful for any experiences or input.

BTW I am not talking main dealer garages here!

It varies entirely from garage to garage, if somewhere tells you they have one and takes your booking but then don't have the car on the day then obviously I wouldn't return.

If you're talking about somewhere that has a courtesy car at short notice, not even main dealers can promise this, they're normally booked in advance.

I'd recommend ringing around some local garages and asking.

Even main dealers don't guarantee courtesy car availability and most independents rarely have them. If I needed work done that I couldn't do my self, I would rather go some were I trusted, rather than some were unkown simply because they have a spare car.

I know its added expense but hiring a car might be a sensible option IMO.

Is this post a Powerpoint presentation?

Even a ratty small car would cost a garage at least a grand a year to have available as a courtesy car and if it's a one or two man band that's a fair bit of profit they would have to make up from charging you more.

Your mechanic is really good but your car keeps breaking down?? Hmmm.

Wouldn't a more reliable car or a more effective mechanic be the better solution?

I think it's dependant on the level of service you're expecting. If I take my £300 Rover to get a cam belt done at the cheapest nearby garage, I wouldn't expect a courtesy car. If they had one, I'd be happy to take it if nobody else needed it, but I wouldn't rely on it.

If I were to take my nicer car for a clutch replacement, I'd pick a decent garage and expect something to run about in while they had my car. An Aygo or a Micra would be fine as all I need is to get from A to B while I'm paying for a service on my car - but I only expect it if I'm paying a higher price for the service. I once used a garage in Derby that paid for the loan of an Aygo from a hire company because their promised hire car hadn't come back in time. I was happy to recommend them until they were bought by a chain and their quality took a big dive.
