Amazing deals to be had and to be honest I couldn't refuse.

Standard car (Red), Manual, 5dr £180.00/month + £2400 Deposit 2 Years 10k miles.

I've ended up going for DSG and metallic paint for £230/month. The only downside as I can see it is the wait!!!
Thats the deal I went for biggrin Kept it standard and manual as it's an absolute bargain at that price cloud9. Cannot wait!

Well done Golf R & driver.

Shame the car is so interminably fking dull in every other respect!
Love the hillclimbing, but totally agree about the Golf. I wish people would stop posting "starting hillclimbing, Sprinting" posts, as it makes me want to give it a go. I did the Prescott revival last year in the Boxster & really enjoyed it. More than one mate said that as your addicted to it, get a west/cater/dutton/MX5 & do it properly!
I did a year of the British Hill CLimb Championship back in the early 90's in my Caterham and it is enjoyable and the atmosphere is great. It is quite poor VFM in terms of track time compared to other motorsports though, with only a few runs a day at usually less than a minute each.

I agree about doing this in a Golf though. Got to be one of the dullest cars to grace a hillclimb.

I know what you mean about the VFM for track time but the atmosphere more than compensates, the camaraderie between drivers makes for a great day. And the adrenaline rush to try to get that one minute (I wish it was only a minute) as close to perfect as possible is massive.

Of course, by going slower you get better value for money - that is my excuse anyway! Plus Harewood is the longest hillclimb in Britain so provides value that way.

Is the Haldex transmission in the Golf R affected by running 19s up front and 18s on the back ?
good point actually does/did it ever engage AWD?

Still,a best start of 2.33 seconds for the first 64 feet, is pretty good, it's more of a traction test than anything IMO. The 1.6 twin 40'd rally camm'd cvh MoJo has done it < 2.. Mind you the golf probably has better mpg hehe

Whilst true, this is slightly misleading, since you can do an entire season of sprints/hillclimbs for a few hundred pounds. By motorsport standards this is an absolute bargain. I suspect the only cheaper motorsport is autosolo. Whilst I'd love to do something "roundy-roundy", a friend has gone from hillclimbing to Fun Cup and he tells me he's spending around £15K/year. I can't afford that.

While the monthly figure does sound like a cracking deal, I still make that as nearly £8k for two years of ownership. Would a Golf R really loose £8k of depreciation in two years? Not trying to knock the lease deals by the way, just trying to work out if leasing really is the cheapest way into a new Golf R.

Presumably the lease figure includes tax, tyres, servicing etc?

Tax but no additional tyres or servicing unless you pay extra for the maintenance.

With the amount of these being knocked out so cheaply i'd be shocked if they're not into 5-digit deprecation within 2 years.

I went for the 5dr DSG also biggrin

Interested to know exactly what tyres ( brand and type etc ) you were running.. you mention only "road rubber"... and you refer to the 19-inch wheels having a softer compound than the 18s.. Wheels are made of alloy... ( ?! ) and how much did you reduce the pressure to get more grip..? I think we should be told... ;-)

Ha! Hello Nigel. Yeah, the wheels are made of alloy. Tyres were, I think Michelins, but this is from memory and I'd need to double check. The 18s were a 280 compound, while the 19s were 140 compound so softer and offer more grip at the expense of wear rate. The four-wheel drive is front biased, so it's just about how much is apportioned to each axle when grip is overcome. Off the line, it was certainly working as there was only the slightest chirp from the fronts before gripping and going. Dumping the clutch in last year's Astra at almost full revs would have seen it just spin the wheels, which is clear from a best 64-feet time of 2.85 seconds in the Astra - half a second behind the Golf R.

Half a second difference in 64 feet between front and four wheel drive seems to be pretty normal - it is regularly the difference between my time in a Fiat Coupe and that of another class competitor in an Audi S3 when it is dry. In the wet that difference can double. My times are pretty similar to the ones you got with the Astra.

Lol you clearly haven't driven one then.

If your "current car" is correct, you have a 182. I went from a 182 to an R and it is far from dull!

According to Wiki that isn't the hill record.
The current outright record holder is Scott Moran, who set a time of 34.76 seconds in June 2014 in his Gould GR61X. Which is an average of 86.8MPH according to my dodgy maths!

A bit more like 24.76 seconds is the record and he frequently runs close to that. About 125 into bottom S. Takes some cojones.
