Even if it won't work online, it will probably be OK to tax it at a Post Office. You can still use blue type old-style V5's at a Post Office.

The local tax disc issuing sub post office nearest me is open until 10.00pm on a Saturday.

You used to be able to. Would be interesting to let us know if not
Is it a new car or a new used car?

Yes, with a V62 and £25.

It'll probably be a chunk less than a month.

Hi guys
I just got the same problem, bought the car, but invalid 12 digit code on v5c/2.
Post office only open tomorrow, so it would not be a problem, but as that thread is 2 years old I am wondering if post office will be able to tax my car these days?
Really frustrating when you get the car but you cannot drive it because of crap DVLA system- can't believe actually that sort of stuff still exists in 2018..
Thanks in advance

If the 12 digit code is not recognised it is because that V5 is not the current one.

If the number is not recognised you will need to apply for a new log book, V62 form and £25 and is currently taking around 2 weeks to arrive.

Is the car taxed and MOTd when you check online?

Who did you buy it from?

By the way, most likely reason for V5 to be not current is motor trader enters details wrong on the system and then gets a new V5 in the traders name arrive. They then realise their mistake (adding themselves as an owner) and call DVLA who transfer it it back to traders name and cancel the new V5.

Trader knows it is cancelled but doesn't tell the buyer because he knows the thought of a V62 and not being able to tax it for up to 6 weeks will put them off a sale.

Bought it from trader
He said it might be because of private plate etc.. Not 100% sure who to trust..
But good news I found post office in petrol station who does road tax and open on Sunday. Just back, they taxed it no problem for a year.. For real V5 now just wait and see, I filled my details on his one, not sure if DVLA will make me documents if that V5 wasn't newest one.. Don't mind paying £25 just want to be able to tax it drive, which I am now, so happy days. And as I said DVLA data base and all the system is shocking.. Will be easier to buy holidays in moon soon than tax your bloody car..

What form did they use or did they simply use your V5 slip?

I was going to say, if you do get them to tax it, do it for a month.

Just in case there is an issue with the current V5. What you don't want to happen is them receive a V62, send a new V5 to you, which will cancel the current tax and refund the last owner. Which could mean your yearly tax gets sent to the previous owner.

If they did it all with the green V5 slip though you are fine.
It will be taxed in your name and you will get a new V5 shortly.

If they just used the V5 you took in then it will be fine mate.
