I'm in the market for a d/cab pick up.

it'll be used for work (I own a small electrical and property services firm) and dragging my caravan about, more specifically, to France next year.

Initially I wouldn't even have considered a D22 Navara due to the well documented engine issues but having had an L200 boil up on me whilst on a test drive and having driven 2.5 hours across the country to see a frankly rubbish Ford Ranger my mind has been opened to the possibility of a Nissan.

I'm looking to spend circa 5K, aside from doing the France run next year i'll be doing relatively low mileage, 8k PA.

I've seen a very clean Navara not far from me, its a D22, 2006, 68k on the clock, is it worth a punt at £4995 or is it going to explode in a shower of con rods and bits of crank shaft before I make it across too France. I'm told I'm safe to buy a D22 from 55 plate onwards as they have a slightly different engine but you'll understand my hesitation!

many thanks for your help on this most pressing issue!

Walk away, walk away, infact run like a mofo away!! No matter how crap my 53plate L200 is, it still keeps going, both neighbours bought navaras at the same time, one went at 42thousand miles and got a replacement engine foc, and was traded for a hilux shortly after, the other one is still going but with teranno engine where the d22 used to be!

my stepdad is a big truck fan and has owned 2 rangers and a vauxhall brava (his baby). i'd recomend the vauxhall brava or its isuzu brother. it comes in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive variant, has a 2.5 td isuzu unit and so far has proved to be trouble free, he's owned it around 10 years now.

Not exactly ringing endorsements so far then! I Was wondering more about whether or not this 06 plate D22 would have one of the engines affected by the notorious con rod failures! Im told the ones of this age don't!

I ran a D22 for 4-5 years from new. Horrible, hateful thing that cost a fortune!

used to work for Balfour Beatty, they toyed with others but from a reliability standpoint it was Hilux all the way, thinks its the only 4x4 they actualy buy now

I recall looking at ebay once at these, and there where more dead ones than working ones at one point. Hilux seems to be popular.

I picked up a 2006 L200 Animal (pram shape) for around your budget, ran it for a year, and sold it for a nice profit.

Can thoroughly recommend them.

54 plate Nissan Navara D22 circa 55k miles

However, it wouldn't put me off as Nissan customer service was unbelievably good. The vehicle had a full (not always Nissan) service history and was actually pretty well cared for given that it was a company truck (single cab pickup). Despite the vehicle being worth £4k at a push, Nissan UK sanctioned a brand new crate engine, turbo and exhaust at a cost to them of £10k. I had to pay about £650 in labour costs but that wasn't an issue. The thing drove like new once it was done.

I'd take one over an L200, especially after my mate's company had two L200s need gearbox rebuilds sub 20k miles...

If you believed all the horror stories you'd never buy another vehicle again, less than 5% of D22's had the con rod fault I was told at a dealers. Nissan eventually extended warranties to 90K miles and 5 years IIRC for the engine.

Usually they were poorly maintained ones as well that went pop, mine I have had since new and is now 10 years old with 112K on the clock, no horror from the engine yet but it does get serviced by the book every 6,000 still by Nissan as the service prices have dropped to less than I was paying 6 years ago. No idea how or why but I don't complain.

It's not the best truck on the market now but in 2004 when I was looking it was the best out there. I shall drive mine into the ground now as I've thought about moving on once or twice before but it does everything required and in a decade has need one washer bottle pump, a starter motor and last month a new exhaust, tyres go for 40K miles, clutch and brake pads still original.

Lots get used on farms so get abused but find a clean one with history and you should be good to go.

Isuzu rodeo.

Ours has been impeccable. Far more room inside than the d22 and better drive (imho) than the hilux with just as good reliability. You'll also get more for your money because you won't be paying for the badge.

I put my (business') money where my mouth is having looked at d22s. Not looked back. Only truck I'd swap it for is a new d-max.

If you do go down the d22 route there is a place in Shrewsbury who can sort the engine issues out and will warrant it. Can't remember the name but they are highly recommended on the forums so sure google will help!

I'm on my third Ford Ranger, the best of the bunch at the time I bought it but I think it'll be an Isuzu next time. They are the simplest of the latest models, all the rest seem to be trying to be too sophisticated for a practical working runabout.

Was going to suggest this. Rodeo Denver is a nice bit of kit, decent enough on fuel and has good pedigree for the 4x4/pickup side of things

To get uprated stuff parts fitted is around 700 quid, and the rest of the engine is pretty good,

I had one doing around 300 miles a week in for around a year in 2010/11 and never spent anything on it other than basic servicing, and changing the rear diff oil.

I had it during the winter or 2010 as well, and up here in Aberdeenshire it was down to minus 20 a lot, it started first time everytime, on AT tires never got stuck in anything, was pretty comfortable as well, ok even driving like a granny and keeping to around 55 max it never pushed north of 31mpg and its not fast but pulls pretty well and booting it a bit from T junctions at night, when nobody around with ice around was hilarious fun.
