Opinions please on an engine pre-oiler. Just wondering how benefical they are, or wether it's just a bit OTT

Too many factors to consider really but I would say on balance no. A big V8 with moderate tune will last for ever as US V8s have been proving for decades. At the other end of the spectrum Jap bikes have been doing big miles all the while being revvved to well past 10k rpm.

To fit to what?

Does the engine have a rep for dying because of lubrication-related failures?

Check out Accusump, same system and often used in motorsport to prevent oil surge issues. I know works Grp A Integrales were fitted with them.
