over there a bit of a red-neck's car - over here not loved either
It is not considered a red necks car. It was for a while in the early 90s, in the same way Escorts, Capris etc were driven by chavs.

They are now collectors cars and have increasing respect. They have survived the periodic dip when they are no longer new and picked up on the cheap and not maintained. Most sporty cars do this- M3's, Scoobys, Integrales, Quattros etc.

The IROC is one of the most famous Camaros of all time.
I should mention at this stage that I've had 5 of them so I am a little biased!

Indifferent reviews from the motoring press and an unfashionable badge meant everyone bought Golfs, Astras, A3s etc. But I had a Bravo, and loved it.

Citroen XM

I love them, I bloody love them.

I have owned 2 and I am looking for a 3rd to take the strain of my 944 S2.

I work as a Contract Mechanical Engineer and my current boss said they may not have taken me on if they had known of my passion. It makes them nervous, an engineer who like French oddities.

The Vauxhall Zafira VXR for me.

If I ever needed a Vauxhall Zafira VXR, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

A guy I know has one and he loves it, he likes the rarity and performance although he does say its pretty juicy on fuel.

Another one for Mk3 Golfs. This is SWMBO's Colour Concept GTI, we bought it 5 years ago for less than shed money, has cost us less than the purchase price in those five years. Fully original, AC, heated colour-coded leathers, lovely piece of kit.

This was my CC GTI, still wish I hadn't sold it. Reliable as ****.

I love the Bristol Fighter, even though I'm aware that it's not universally appreciated! It's a superb looking design but it has a few angles where it looks a bit hokey, which can't help it's cause.

Good:

Bad:

But what an amazing rear end. And who wouldn't want a V10?

And finally, one I didn't see mentioned. Remember Colin McRae Rally games? I don't know why, but when I first got it, I picked the Renault Megane Coupe as my car of choice. Liked it ever since. Full rally livery please!

But even the plain old boring 2.0 road version makes me smile appreciately. In Yellow. So weird!
Yes! Love them. Rally Championship on the PC!

Seen a few mentions of the Calibra (for which I have a soft spot as my Dad had a MkIII Cavalier around that time) but one car which rarely gets mentioned these days - not so much hated as just completely forgotten about - is the Ford Probe. Really thought they were a great looking car when they were about and don't think time has been too cruel to them either...

Oh, and I forgot one.

Poorly reviewed, lacking interesting noise, interior plastics that look cheaper than the lunchboxes I used to take to school... and so badly designed they couldn't think of anywhere sensible for a numberplate.

Yet I really want one. In reality I think what I really want a Focus ST or one of its close rivals, but I'd like a go in one of these first. Be a while before I can afford one anyway, so I've got time to think about it.

EDIT: Second hand, anyway. Who the actual flying fk would spend over £30k on one of these instead of a Golf R or M135i? confused

Agree with you on both. Really liked the post facelift 6 cylinder Z3's and a 2.0 megane coupe was my first half decent car.
My goodness, fast becoming a Z3 appreciation thread!

Fits perfectly, as its really a car that 'no one else' seems to like most of the time. Never told someone I own a Z3 and had 'nice car' or similar. Normally, I just don't mention it ofcourse...

You hit the nail on the head re the post facelifts- starting to look rather spiffing now imho.

Mine:

The Megane less so, even in full rally livery. Im from the McRae games generation, and these still never tickled me. Remember those poor Meganes used to get Max Powered with the mkiv Supra-esque spoiler and Morette quad headlights alot. Something of the blancmange about them to my eye.

Somebody who just wouldn't buy a VW or a BMW out of principle!.
The QV is usually very highly rated by those that bought them, especially the phase 2 version. 😊

boxedin The Toyota Previa from the early 90's...

To my 8 year old eyes in '92 it looked so futuristic on the cover of the first CAR magazine I owned and treasuredsmile For that reason only there is a soft spot in my heart for them.

Don't get me wrong velocemitch- I have a real soft spot for them and I would be *delighted* to be proven wrong about my criticisms. I presume you drive one? smile

When I eventually change my car- likely to be in about three decades at current rate of saving hehe - I'm interested in something that strikes a good compromise between roadholding and a reasonable ride, given that a lot of my days are spent on pretty bumpy B-Roads. A Giulietta might appeal.

I'm on about the TCT introductory special edition here, to be very specific. It might be good for £25-27k new maybe, but over £30k seems very steep.

+1

You have to love the absurdity of a retro styled pickup with a metal folding roof.

No I don't have one actually, I ran a cooking JTDm for three and half years, went back yesterday actually. It's just that Alfa often gets a kicking in the press and it's frequently undeserved. I expect you would love the QV tct, but yes at 30k you would have to be very keen. Think there are some good deals about though, the dealers are realistic...
I rated my Giulietta as the best set up car I've had for the bumpy B roads stuff, which like you is my natural habitat.

at the time the Calibra was a more daring design the Probe merely good looking - some years further on the Calibra looks hopelessly out-dated and the Probe looks still good
