As is so often the way, real life has got in the way of my motoring dreams and made me daydream even more.
I've just had twins, and already had an older kid, so it's people carrier city for me.

But it got me thinking: if I was going to spend £5k - £10k on a daily commuter, I'd want it to be fun, fast(ish) and have a great exhaust note. And be low maintenance...

Any suggestions? Fait 500 Abarth seems fairly rorty but a gross retro-mobile.

My CLK55 makes a pretty amazing noise. For sale now at a barely believeable £4500!

Cooper S JCW? Always think they sound good when they go past at reasonable chat.

My first thought was Golf R32. Sound great straight out of the box. Not that fast though and quite thirsty. Otherwise I think any v6 with a decent exhaust can sound great. Perhaps not so good on mpg though...

For a car that is completely OEM, then surely it would be the R32 or the 350z (you could get a Nismo exhaust as a factory option). Upping the running costs, probably a 996 Porsche with PSE option or an older TVR.

C5 RS6. Since I first heard one fly past I was enchanted. Lovely noise whether on idle or at full chat, and available from £7.5k nowadays.. god I want one.

R32s always did sound good.

I guess it depends what exhaust noise you like, you could probably get an older big V8 pretty cheap, stick a free flowing exhaust on it and enjoy.

Good shout. An Avant one drove by me yesterday when I was out walking, and I'd forgotten how nice they sound. The low-speed burble was lovely. Can't remember if the old C5 S6 and the A6 4.2 sounded as good?

It's no AMG V8, but then you won't want baby food splattered all round your AMG either.

BMW M3?

On the 500 Abarth. The Grande Punto Abarth also had the same engine, and a very similar exhaust system.
