Slightly O/T, but got the Pioneer head unit we discussed a couple of weeks ago fitted to the S124:
And Mrs K's new barge arrived today:
Looks like a nice bus so far but there is an unsurprisingly noticeable drop in quality compared to The Tank. Ashtray and cupholder flaps in particular aren't great. Will be interesting to see which I prefer once I get a drive!
Stereo looks decent nice and restrained if not as stylish and integrated as mine And Mrs K's new barge arrived today:

BM looks nice and understated on good wheels. And yet the whole world seems to want M-sport.

Right gents, need some help. Have a poultry Scottish budget or around £3k to find an R129. Am I being rediculous? And would I be better waiting to winter to find a bargain?
Unless it is badly mispriced by a naive seller, or you have both the inclination and the facilities to do a lot of remedial work yourself, I think that is below the price range at which it makes sense to buy an R129 these days. If you want it to run right and drive properly a 3K one will probably end up costing more than a £6K one within a year of purchase.BigTom85 said:
You git. Thats pretty much the holy grail for me...
I have an e38 740i on the drive at the moment. I've never driven an e39, can anyone comment on how they compare?
Apart from the fact that you will be changing your own gears, and there is a tiny bit less elbow room, an E39 540i touring and an E38 740i drive pretty much the same, which is unsurprising given that almost all the mechanical and suspension stuff is the same.I have an e38 740i on the drive at the moment. Obviously we in this thread tend to be biased, but I've done the Victorian-dad thing of saying that as I pay the bills I get to choose the car! So far, I seem to have got away with it, but my wife returns tomorrow and will see it for the first time; wish me luck!
In the interests of openness I feel I ought to report progress. It has not gone well. My daughter now says she won't ever drive it. My wife cried when she saw it. These are early days though, and I'm optimistic.
Fantastic post, I love your optimism, my wife and daughter never like any of the cars I buy, I just buy them anyway, they usually end up being correct unfortunately.

As much as I like old Mercs, I genuinely don't understand the heater controls larsson7 said:

Simply put:
top button: full ac and evaporator
middle: Economy(?) ac only when required
bottom: aire recirculation
Not quite: middle is Economy as you say, which disables a/c (and evaporator of course) entirely. Even if you switch to minimum temp and it's a hot day you won't get cooling. top button: full ac and evaporator
middle: Economy(?) ac only when required
bottom: aire recirculation
When no lights are lit on the 3 buttons, A/C is on but it always functions 'only when required'.

One thing about this 840: it's a sport model, but has a standard bumper fitted. Accident damage perhaps? I know the sports one are quite expensive.
It looks lovely though, and I actually prefer it with the standard bumper- looks more wedge like in profile.
ETA: Land Sail tyres- not a good sign.
You beat me to it to ask that question i.e Why the non-Sport front bumper? Although the answer is obvious. The Sport front bumper sits very low and is easily damaged, can be difficult to repair and expensive to buy.It looks lovely though, and I actually prefer it with the standard bumper- looks more wedge like in profile.
ETA: Land Sail tyres- not a good sign.
There are Landsail tyres on the rear on my E38 728. The chap I bought the car from had literally just put them on new so I've kept an driven on them. It would have been churlish to have got rid of them because they were brand new. Actually, they aren't too bad once scrubbed in. I've now used them for 20,000 miles and there's still loads of tread on them...they refuse to die!
But really they are no more complex than an E38 or E39 (e.g. 740i or 540i). Same engine, gearbox etc.
The trouble comes if you have to buy 8-Series specific parts i.e body, trim, lights etc. However, as time has gone by more cars are being broken than used to be the case. There used to be so few being broken that sellers could charge large amounts for second-hand bits. Now it's a bit more competitive. But as an example, you see that misted up driver's side side/indicator lens on that red car...last time I looked (a few years ago now) they were over £180 from BMW just for the lens!

I take your post as evidence that you and I have "normal" families. My daughter is on a driving lesson at the moment, no doubt fondly imagining herself at the wheel of a VW Golf (preferably grey, please daddy); I showed your post to my wife who was amused but, despite me pointing and cooing at every old MB for years (do you think she may not listen!?!?), asked to see what a 190 looked like; she thinks your wife is quite right, and would cry too.
Thanks. I think. They may have a point but I will, in that Canute-like way that infuriates them so much, continue to insist that I'm right. My wife is driving the car for the first time today so I'll get a reaction later, but as she got in she said 'it's not a small car'. I really hope they come to like it; even after not much over 100 miles I love the little thing. Simple, really well-executed, stylish (here we go, the blokey-denial once again) and in fantastic condition.
Anyway, 0a, if it really does come to it, you get first refusal. However, I haven't told you what I paid for this excellent example!
Hmmm....
Moving on, I like the look of this a124, and the estimate puts it in thread budget:
