My other half thinks they're a bit on the naff side
When I got married in '08, I simply told SWMBO that one of the ushers was driving me. Something along the lines of 'WTF is that' was her response when she saw a White Mk1 STi with a bloomin' great gold bow on it. In hindsight, I have to agree on the naffness, but it was good fun getting to the little country church! ;-)

The main thing putting me off this as being my potential family man practical enough fast car is that engine's ring land failure horror stories on the interwebs. Is it as big a problem as some make out?
I like the way it looks and I don't care about image or soft touch plastics (who touches their dashboard anyway?)

I am a big fan of Subaru's hence my username and I have owned six of them but when Subaru put that EJ25 lump in the new STI that as a big no no for me so for the 1st time I went from Jap cars to a German car the new Mk7 Golf R. It pains me to say it the Golf R is the complete package I love it.

Must be me, I don't think it looks 'that' bad outside, but inside its looks like its 15 years old.............
Nobody ever bought a Subaru for the "inside" MustardCutter said:

No reported cases of ringland failures on these - apart from a few tuned examples in the States (they were 350whp+). Some of the early models (again, in the States) had bearing issues which were factory tolerance problems. Haven't read or heard of any problems over here but we've only had 250 examples come over.PistonBroker said:

lol nice story In hindsight, I have to agree on the naffness, but it was good fun getting to the little country church! ;-)
She just cringes and speaks through gritted teeth when I say I would still fancy one. She doesn't like the noise, she thinks the vent on the bonnet looks wrong (even when I explain it's function) and the bigger wings look ridiculous. These are all factors I love about them
I test drove one today and just didn't get on with it at all - I drove there in my ancient leggy UK Turbo 2000 and the new STI felt massive and unwieldy, and the steering was doing some very odd things when pushed. The turbo lag was very pronounced. Very disappointing all round (apart from the looks which I still think are great) - I really wanted to love it as I am getting annoyed with ancient leggy UK Turbo 2000 foibles.
I have owned 5 Subaru wrx saloons, 2002-2004 ,the first one I bought in 2005 ,the last around 2010 , I have not owned one since because by the end they felt very dated ,the cabin looked cheap and mainstream cars were putting out the same power , my 530d is 220bhp . The german cars keep pushing the bar up for the interiors ,The BMW"s are nice to drive ,but interiors on the 3 series are bland, The Audi"s look good ,nice inside but the steering is vague. I can put up with the Audi"s steering , the rest of the car I like.
The new STI looks good outside but the cabin looks cheap ,and I think for 27k you would expect more .
The new Focus RS if it is 30k will easily out sell the sti. I think that's the problem 15 years ago the Subaru was quick for the money and 4wd , now there are cars with the same power and a lot more comfort
