A Saab that requires full restoration for £10k

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115705596293
Finished it is maybe worth £20k from a specialist. So clearly pitched at the DIY restorer.
And on that basis probably not overpriced. To many of us this looks like a messy place to spend 10 grand but to the right person it's probably the best way of getting to the perfect Saab.

With every surface requiring restoration (you can see the drivers seat bolster for instance) even a DIY'er would struggle to get that done for less than £20k if the entry price to the project is £10k just for the hulk.

I look at a lot of these wondering if they were the result of an argument over whether to sell a project or not.

Her indoors: "sell it".
Him: "fine" -- puts it up for 10x its real value.
Her "it's not sold??!?"
Him "good".

The 180s dont seem to be very popular, Ok, some might not be bothered but why settle for the lower powered model and pay extra ?

Colour, condition and mileage dont look bad, but its not a five grand car.

I would pay 5 grand for a MK1 TT but it would have to be an utterly perfect 225 with evidence of all the many possible faults being dealt with, decent tyres, a few choice mods etc. Not a dealer chancing their arm that they get a live one, bet they paid a grand for this.

Not so fussed at 20 years old on mileage, must buy these on history and condition as they are needy old things if neglected, pretty needy if they arent.

Would put it at mid late £2000's assuming it checks out. Do like the colour and wonder if that was a special order one ? pity its not a 225 though.
Exactly, my tatty 225 cost me 1800 quid a year ago, and has no rust-related advisories. If you like welding you can probably find a salvageable 180 for a grand. Absolutely nuts. They're so cheap the price difference is negligible, same on fuel and insurance, so no reason to go for the 180.

And agreed about what you'd want for 5k. I'm looking to trade mine up at some point and that's my ceiling for the actual unicorn I'm looking for, completely turnkey with everything the right colour, strong history, recent consumables and not expecting to spend any more money on it for at least a couple of years.

There seem to be a few around in dark green, I'm not sure if they're all the same shade or if some of them are special order.

It is overpriced but find another in that condition and with low miles.
Agreed, this looks like a lovely example and they're becoming extremely rare in this condition. I have to say, I'd be tempted by it.
Only 1700 miles in the last 5 years. Can't be good for a car.

It's a 'special addition' apparently.... sigh

That Saab is in far better condition than many. Seat bolsters aren't the issue on those; the usual problems are:

- bonnet and tailgate rust (replacement tailgate with this one; bonnet seems OK in the usual places);
- door bottoms rust (this one comes with new doors);
- driveshaft tunnels rust;
- rear end of sills rust;
- gearbox.

On any C900, you'll be looking at:

- headlining;
- finding an uncracked dashboard moulding (this one seems OK, which is good).

Those seats can be replaced - plenty still around for parts. But you can get brand new leather replacement covers (not in Napa leather, but good enough for many) from Lseat in the USA for $350 a side.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want to pay less than £10k; I'm saying £10k isn't a stupid asking-price for a dealer, prior to haggling / some PX deal.

Not the best of adverts. £10k for a 15year old Alfa 159 with 160k on the clock. Granted it’s an interesting 159, but £10k seems steep.

I restored a car exactly like that. Same colour, same year. I would say I've owned in the region of 15 to 20 Saab 900s. I restored a couple more including a 99t. Even with it being a special 'addition' it is not worth what they're asking. For a DIY restorer the guy isn't going to have the money of a collector / chequebook restorer so will be looking for a bargain in the first instance. And you can always get the 'carlsson' look by simply fitting airflow bumpers.

I've never understood why the 159 has held its price so well.

Wow
I just don't get it.
I could drop £600k on so many other rare and beautiful creations before opting for a Sierra.
