Id say that 5 series is overpriced by atleast 4 grand, my friends got a 14 plate LCI 520d that he’s struggling to sell, M sport plus pack, carbon black, 60k miles that’s just been reduced to 12,999, it’s even a euro 6 diesel unlike that one.

However, in terms of the 5 series, I still wouldn’t pay even 10k for one, I drove it for a few weeks, lovely car, comfortable, fast....ish but..I just couldn’t spend 10k on such a boring car. 530d, maybe but 520? No chance

Which brings me onto that Scorpio, my god 12 grand!!

I don’t fully understand the appeal for old fast fords, maybe because I wasn’t around in those days however, at least the cosworths are quick and fun to drive, why would you pay 12 grand for an old, ugly, slow and boring to drive ford that was shed value 5 years ago. Mental
A few things
That is the ‘Cosworth’ version - it’s the 2.9 24v BOB V6 with 207bhp - shows the engine in the advert

I know even hot hatches have to do 160mph these days to not be considered ‘slow’ but this Scorpio was a 140mph car
It was more about luxury than speed but these could shift well for a big car going back over 25 years

Obviously the looks were and still are subjective and it is a 23 year old car so old and ugly can apply.

I seriously doubt one with this mileage and condition was ever £1500 though
A very low mileage one sold for nearly 12k recently
You can buy a higher mileage one for shed money

The thing is its unlikely that it will sale for 12k

Even if it does the market for them is so niche, so if you want to sell it on again then you would have to wait months or years (decades) if you wanted anything close to what you paid.

Years ago I bought an old W124 coupe for £1200, It was perfect spec and engine (3.2, leather etc) . I thought I got a bargain, I ran it for two years and got it running better than when I bought it. I then got a new job and needed to sell it quickly (within a few weeks)....But I couldnt....In the end I had to sell it for £750. It was better than cars I had seen for £2500-£3000, but I didnt have the months to wait to sell it, as it was such a niche audience to sell to.

That’s what I meant, it’s a barge, sure it had a Cosworth engine however it’s still a cruiser. It’s not going to be fun and while it’s made for luxury, you could pick up a S500 for less than half the price In good nick that will be 10 times better in every way AND fun considering it has a 5.5 V8 with 380 bhp. That’s my point!

Having had 2 W220's and nearly bought a CL500, I struggle to see how they're fun to drive. Sure maybe a newer one is a bit quicker, but still hardly fun.

You miss the point - no one would buy any classic car if those criteria were brought into play.

Go to a Classic Ford Car show and see if there’s an S500 sat there with an old boy sat in his deckchair behind it

You’re confusing your preferences with what other people buy

As the guy above said, it’s a very niche market .....but it does exist

And I repeat the point made above regarding the BMW someone suggested. Which is going to be cheaper to service and maintain - the Scorpio or an S500 Mercedes?!

to be fair i just picked a random 5 series, with low miles around the same price, to illustrate the silliness of comparing the Scorpio with a new £40k+ 5 series rather than a second hand 5 series of similar value. If it sells for 4k less it makes my point even stronger

I wonder what slavage is. wink

There is another ad for the same car, auction this time, with the sole bid of £1,000 a more accurate reflection of its value:

No way did the insurance pay out £12k for that. They would have fixed it if that was the settlement.

It's still listed as being silver. That's a full paint job and not a wrap.

A lot of people are defending the Scorpio yet wouldn’t buy it for 5 grand let alone 12

Well it will still work out cheaper once you factor in the 6k difference, furthermore, if you did use the Scorpio, it’s going to plummet in value unlike the S.

I appreciate it is sort of a classic, but only to an extremely small market, and that market needs to have enough money to justify paying 12k for it.

12k for a Cosworth Sapphire? Yes, 12k for a bug eyed Scorpio? No chance

Imagine telling people you'd spent £12.5k on this. They'd have you sectioned.
How to lose £10,000 in one second. When you push that bank transfer button, turn round to the guy and ask how much he would buy it back from you. You'll be lucky to get £2,500. .and that's on a good day.

Never sell for anywhere near that money.

How about 6k for a 24v Cosworth engined sapphire. That is a bargain.

The driver's seat bolsters are all saggy and creased. I wouldn't expect that on an unused car.
