Again, they appear reasonably cheap but only in comparison to the inflated RRP's of new cars, in real terms adjusted for inflation etc used cars are as if not more expensive than they've ever been.
Oh they are .. local dealer near my place in Ireland has an Octavia VRS UK import currently fit sale .. 2017 with 90k miles on it ... €29k !!!

All the stuff he has is at least double the U.K. price. He buys high mileage U.K. cars, mainly VAG, from the Auctions then thinks of a silly price

By contrast to most of Europe, and all of Scandinavia, UK secondhand cars are ridiculously cheap. I think that’s the point he was making.

A 200k Miles 2002 Rav 4 in Spain, that’ll be €5k please. A 2001 MR2, €9k ta. A ropey old 2001 boxster €10k+ etc etc.
Yes I assumed that was the comparison that he was attempting to make,,, lots of different things cost lots of different prices in lots of different countries, entirely pointless and irrelevant to try and compare and contrast them.

Thank you for having the patience and eloquence to explain this seemingly unfathomable concept better than I could to all the idiot debt junkies.

These inflated RRP's have had an effect on all car prices across the board from poverty spec Corsas to supercars and also impacted used values.
Indeed. It’s the same with watches, can no longer look in the window at a £1200 Omega because 0% finance and easy credit card means ‘inflation’

I just looked on Ernest Jones and a poxy seamaster (which used to be the eternal 21st birthday watch) is now £4117! But it’s ‘only’ £78 per month (listed next to the price)

I can't find it right now but in the Facebook Marketplace there's a Fiat Coupé 20v Turbo for £20k.

The vendor says he's spent about that much on a restoration/rebuild.

I'm not sure that's how it works with cars.

It's easy, just compare to wages.

They earn less and the cars cost more.

Although the other way of looking at it is whats the cost of ownership and who pays more in depreciation.

Spotted this smart looking 325i (E30) up for auction - low estimate: £18K Ouch !

Especially as this same car sold for ~£4K 5years ago

Amazing what some alloys, rear spoiler etc can do for a fairly ordinary looking car !

A Sport isn't comparable with a non-Sport E30. Yes, I'm biased! biggrin

Stock markets down, a pandemic virus, brexit fears, panic buying, oh, and fat eck's pervy hands..

What you need in this crisis is an R-reg Mondeo GLX estate for 5000 sheets.

'Last service at 10479 miles in 2012'

Doesn't fill me with much confidence, even if it was 3k miles or so ago.

I think the anger is because the "pay by the month" model has been used by the car brands as an opportunity to push the retail price of cars up.
A Corsa isn't a 16k car, and not many people can afford to buy one at that price (not the sort of people looking for a Corsa anyway). But they can afford it at £145 per month, which ties them in to a cycle of monthly payments and a replacement every three years. They think they are getting bargain because of the high RRP, but that just exists in order to encourage them into a more profitable monthly scheme

In 1984 the list price of a base spec 950 Fiesta was £4200, or in today's money around £13,600. Doesn't seem that bad to me, considering the main selling points of that car were twin sunvisors and a laminated windscreen.

In Aug 1985 I boiught my wife her first ever new car a "C" reg bright red Fiesta 950 base for £3500...

I don't know what CSi's fetch currently, but, as stated, they're very rare, the ultimate model. It's also very low mileage, and I bet the plate alone is worth £20k.

To add, looking at values they seem to vary massively, but on the first page here there is one at approaching £70k - https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/10/850/
