I think the anger is because the "pay by the month" model has been used by the car brands as an opportunity to push the retail price of cars up.
A Corsa isn't a 16k car, and not many people can afford to buy one at that price (not the sort of people looking for a Corsa anyway). But they can afford it at £145 per month, which ties them in to a cycle of monthly payments and a replacement every three years. They think they are getting bargain because of the high RRP, but that just exists in order to encourage them into a more profitable monthly scheme
Why isn't a Corsa a £16k car and why the generalisation around buyers' of them?

Better for you?

I don't know what CSi's fetch currently, but, as stated, they're very rare, the ultimate model. It's also very low mileage, and I bet the plate alone is worth £20k.

To add, looking at values they seem to vary massively, but on the first page here there is one at approaching £70k - https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/list/10/850/
It been prepped as a press car, 20 years ago though wink
I’ll be amazed if it was worth half of that.

It's only a few years ago you'd struggle to sell for 5k;

You obviously dont know your beemers, that's a manual CSI. They were never "5k" especially at that mileage.

The road is littered with Ford Fiesta's... they start at 16k? Vauxhall has a rival car called the "Corsa" and for some reason, someone on here has said "A Corsa is not a 16k car" I don't like to be the bearer of bad news... "the Corsa is a 16k car whether you like it or not"

Thing is, nobody pays list price for a Vauxhall, or most other manufacturers for that matter, which makes list price irrelevant
You do on finance plus the interest or you only buy half the car.

Not really as you only fund the difference between the discounted list price and your deposit. And if you lease the list price is even less relevant smile

Honestly you don't. The list price could be £1m, but if you bought it for £15k and financed £10k of it, you'll only pay interest on the £10k. Thus making the list price irrelevant

£27.5k for a Mk2 Capri 3.0 Ghia that hasn't been on the road since 2005 and looks pretty rough. Best laugh I've had all week.

I love an classic fast Ford.. (don't fully understand the prices though!).. But if you are asking the think end of 30K for ANY car at least put the petrified rubber mats in the bin and put something tidy in!

Neither does the seller. Even the very best low mileage near concours Mk2 3.0 Ghia would struggle to break £20k. It's probably worth £3k.

It always seems to be Imprezas that I contribute to this thread.

How about a shabby bugeye, with the usual rotten rear end, a very poor MOT history and not especially low miles?

Bids starting at £8,500! I wouldn't even pay half that for it.

This Mk1 GXL only fetched a bit more at the H & H auction at the weekend

Mind you I guess you can’t blame the seller for trying

Anyone who describes a Peugeot 206 diesel as a "possible future classic" wants their head examining.

Wouldn't the GTi "refinements" make it less refined with sporty suspension? I'm not up on the 206 GTi differences

If anything it'll be even less refined than the GTI to compensate for the big iron block diesel up front.

Downwards?

Used cars in the UK are ridiculously cheap.
Again, they appear reasonably cheap but only in comparison to the inflated RRP's of new cars, in real terms adjusted for inflation etc used cars are as if not more expensive than they've ever been.
By contrast to most of Europe, and all of Scandinavia, UK secondhand cars are ridiculously cheap. I think that’s the point he was making.

A 200k Miles 2002 Rav 4 in Spain, that’ll be €5k please. A 2001 MR2, €9k ta. A ropey old 2001 boxster €10k+ etc etc.
Very good point, a Romanian guy I work with showed me a car he wants to buy when he goes back to Romania, I kid you not, 2011 116i sport for €11,000 with 140,000km, same car here is less than 5 grand.

I never understood why used cars here are cheaper, is it because they’re RHD can’t really be sold anywhere else but here or Cyprus? Even if that was the case, LHD cars still should be cheaper as there’s so many of them across Europe !
