Seriously Overpriced Cars

Land Rover Defender.
The basic price of a basic Defender is huge, when you think what you [don't] get as standard. Likewise used ones hold their value well, even a 10yo 100k plus Defender 110 SW is likely to set you back at least £10k..
You're really buying the heritage and capability rather than comfort or refinement and toys.
My cousin has just a 14 reg Defender 90 and its pretty well equipped including heated leather. The basic price of a basic Defender is huge, when you think what you [don't] get as standard. She's had Rav4's for the last 20 years but loves the Defender. Must have paid around £25k for it but says its a keeper.
Thought I would search for Morris Marinas. Bound to be someone who thinks they are worth money :-)
Found this

My dad had 2, a 1.3 Coupe and a 1.8TC which was meant to be the top of the range!
They were both shocking.
Rusted infront of your eyes, dodgy handling even by 1970's standards and both cost my Dad a fair wedge in repairs each year.
The Avenger was meant to be a much better car.

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet. Rod Leach's RX7. It's been on sale at the same price since God was a boy and no one seems interested at £35,000.

Stock 993 TT for €225k

Out of interest, what do we think people expect from cars of these sort of price premiums?
Even a car that wasn't that great, if now rare, can be worth a lot to the right buyer if that person wants a mechanically perfect and rot-free car.
A car from the 1980s that isn't crumbly is an extremely rare thing in itself. If someone wants a perfect example, they must (and I believe do) realise that the pool from which to choose from will be vanishingly small and thus they'll pay disproportionately more for the car than what they could get a 90% car for - which is the sort of bracket I suspect the vast majority here are used to.
I'm not saying there aren't examples here which are anything but someone chancing their arm, but some of the cleaner examples posted really aren't cars you can find anywhere. Once you're in that territory it really is a case of whatever someone with means is willing to pay.
Sadly for me, Miuras are well in to that bracket. They are old, not that fast, not that great handling apparently, yet still fetch £750k+ regularly. If I could compete with that without skinning myself I'd be helping keep the prices up there

Another NI car:

Jaguar XJS Convertible V12 6.0L 21k miles: £34,950
Granted its a good one, but who the hell would pay anywhere near that?

I was at a conference recently where one of the guys from Autotrader showed us this:

Apparently, it holds the record for the longest amount of time that a car's been advertised on Autotrader, having been on there from the same dealer for nearly 7 years.

The bottom of the front wing doesn't look all that solid and is that rust on the sill?
4star is an interesting company, nothing the advertise is remotely sensible price wise yet they seem to turn over stock quite quickly. I wonder if there is a cachet with buying a car from them?
It seems a similar thing with Munich Legends for BMW's.
Its all marketing no? The whitewash backgrounds the flashy website which is regularly updated and is better than most dealers own websites.4star is an interesting company, nothing the advertise is remotely sensible price wise yet they seem to turn over stock quite quickly. Just noticed they have a rather tasty looking racing puma in for 7995 only has 40k on it which doesn't seem to bad!
Have to agree about R34 GTRs and S15 Silvias. I own the latter but there's no way it's worth 6k more than a S14a! Brilliant car but yes, overpriced.
R34 GTRs are just stupid, 3 times more expensive than a R33 GTR? Assuming it's due to it being the last Skyline GTR as the R35 isn't technically a Skyline.

7 years!!? Surely it's lost any margin whatsoever and then some? What's the depreciation each year? There must be a reason why the dealer has still got it and didn't lump it through an auction just to get something, anything back on it years ago. He's still in business after at least 7 years so it can't be as simple as he's just a bad businessman.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

The R34 GTR also got a lot of glamour points from starring in 2 Fast 2 Furious.R34 GTRs are just stupid, 3 times more expensive than a R33 GTR? Assuming it's due to it being the last Skyline GTR as the R35 isn't technically a Skyline.
1967/68 shape Fastback Mustangs are hugely sought after for the same reason of having starred in Bullitt and Gone in 60 Seconds.
Any particular model which starred in a popular film will be more sought after that objectively similar cars which didn't star in popular films.
